Sciban is a very kind professor that helps you if you ask him questions and is helpful when giving feedback on your draft papers. But beware of his exams, they are quiet long, but lack the amount of time given for you to finish all the questions in a well answered manner. Unless your answers are the same as his key, your mark will be disappointing.

Lectures were useless, hard marker, not very open to opinions. A lot of the "facts" he makes are just opinions, but when you write an opinion he'll tell you that your statement is "too strong." Minuscule things he mentions in class might end up on the test, but the rest of lecture is completely pointless. Didn't learn anything.

Have to attend lecture to get the notes, no textbook either, just a "book of reading" that you have to buy that has extra readings in it. midterm and final are all written with a lot to do in a short amount of time. Dr Sciban is a nice guy and helpful if you go talk to him though, remembers his student's names and essay topics which is nice.

Sciban is a great prof, seriously! Here's why: Yes, there is a paper, but he offers the ENTIRE class a chance to send him a draft of your essay before the due date. So, he's actually telling you how to do well in his own class. Also, if you ask questions in a respectful manner, Dr. Sciban will take the time to give you an insightful answer.

Honestly the worst professor I've had in all my undergrad years. I have never received a grade lower than 85 in my four years as an undergrad until I enrolled in his class. His tests are open-book, but it seems like he draws numbers from a hat when grading exams. Extremely confusing, contradictory, and unacademic. Terrible. Professor. Period.

Do not take this class! He has open book tests but has extensive notes he refuses to post which you need to copy word for word on the test to get a good mark. He also racially profiles students and forces people to answer questions in class. He isn't interested in opinions other than his own. A pointless class. Didn't learn anything.

Passionate, kind, funny prof., peculiar but funny. Super helpful and willing to take time for everyone. His tests are right from the notes and he expects an expanded explanation but definitely not anything extremely hard or unfair.

This prof is very passionate, and knowledgeable! You also rarely see someone who is willing to help this much with sincerity. His tests are very easy if you attend class and study your notes. Essays are marked carefully and fairly. If you want to challenge yourself and improve, this class is for you. I will definitely take another one of his.

His class certainly is not easy, but that doesn't mean its impossible. A lot of people misunderstand his open book tests. You need to study and prepare. If you put in the effort to prepare, he will help you. He offers to look over your answers to reading responses which will appear on the test and provides lengthy feedback. He is very dedicated.

His exams are all written and to get full marks you have to basically memorize your notes word for word. Sometimes the irrelevant things he talks about are included in the exams, so attention is key to doing well in his class. The only thing I liked about the way he teaches is that he allowed you to submit an essay draft before the due date

Don't take this course. Very specific answers required for good marks. All the tests are open book, if you quote the textbook you should be fine. His notes are pretty useless though, tells the class to go by his notes, but then state that the answer is wrong. Inconsistent marking and absolutely no respect for opinions other then his.

Attend the lectures and ask questions. Once you get to know the man himself you start to understand how he structures his classes and he clearly knows much about Chinese culture. Answers emails in a very timely manner and provides the option of sending in a draft of your term paper, which is very rare for a professor. Overall a fair class and prof

His tests require a lot of writing. He expects certain answers to his questions, and if it is not written you do not get full marks. Going in to ask him about his marking guidelines does not help. His marking guidelines are confusing to understand.

Professor Sciban is very knowledgeable about the Chinese Canadian community, he clearly knows what e is talking about and encourages the class to take part in discussion. Lectures are mostly note taking (lots and lots of notes). He does give lots of opportunity for extra help which will definitely minimize his lack of clarity during lectures.

AVOID. AVOOOIIIDDDDDD!!!!! He is SUPER UNCLEAR. He contradicts himself every 3 sentences and he jumps everywhere. His midterms aren't hard IF you get the gist of what he is trying to say, but that's the hardest part. DO NOT RECOMMEND. STAY AWAY!!!!!

Wow, I never say this but avoid this prof, if you regurgitate the textbook back you'll do aces, he also seems to pick his marks for each student out of a hat. I am in fourth year and I've never seen so much inconsistency in marking! He also disregards any prior knowledge of China you've learned.

An extremely knowledgeable and passionate professor. Replies to mails timely, offers help for things. However, an extremely picky marker!! I managed to make it to 4th year with a 3.89 GPA until I took his class, not bragging but I know how to study diligently. Didn't work this time. He will pick your work apart like a BBQ duck. Beware!
