Dr. Wessel is great but her grading scale is awful. Its 8-point and she wont round up your grade. Shes also a really tough grader and isnt always fair on assignments.

DO NOT TAKE WESSEL! She does not consider your grade to be an "A" unless you get a 92. That's right, a 91.5? B. Not even an A-. Wessel also uses outdated terms and is borderline offensive at times. She is not approachable so you better be brave if you need to go talk to her. Ruined my chance at a 4.0 despite my hard work. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!

Comment:

Dr. Wessel makes human sexuality fun at 9:30am and establishes an open environment with students. Content isn't difficult and tests are mostly MC and free response where you get full credit. Take this class for credit or as an elective you'll enjoy her lectures.

Comment:

Dr. Wessel is really sweet, but her grading criteria is horrendous. She grades your "drafts" way too harshly, and even if you take the draft to her and she says its fine before you submit it, you will still get a 7/10 or something ridiculous and say you did it wrong. The tests are hard and the average is usually in the low 70s. Do not take :(

I love this class! I don't understand why some people don't like her. I think she's very nice. The lectures are really interesting and she uses a lot of visual aids like models and photos. The book itself is really interesting, too. Be aware that the people you sit by are your permeant group members for the semester.

Dr. Wessel is probably one of the worst professors I have had at JMU. Her 8 point grading scale is ridiculous making an 83 a C, which I don't see as fair at all. Almost every week we have "drafts" due but she grades them so harshly you would think they were final submissions. Also her voice is annoying and her lectures have a novel on each slide.

Gives ABSOLUTELY NO clarification on assignments and is super vague on what she wants and then grades harshly. Does not give fair credit for assignments and takes off points differently for different groups/people. No clear grading rubrics ever. Dry lectures and wastes way too much paper. Worst professor I've ever had DO NOT TAKE. DO NOT TAKE.

Comment:

This was my favorite class I've ever taken at JMU, and she is one of my favorite professors. Kind, funny, and does a good job of keeping lectures engaging and interesting to follow. Some of the information she uses is very outdated or incorrect (esp. sexual/gender orientations/identity), but overall a great class to take. Easy exams and easy A.

Dr. Wessel makes this class alot harder than it has to be, her 8-point scale and lack of grades makes it hard to get an A, but still doable. Skip a class on a group project day and your grade will plummet. Most likely will not respond to your emails if you have an issue. Tests are easy but her lectures are pointless. Take someone else if possible.

Her 8-point scale and lack of pluses and minuses makes it seem as if she doesn't want you to succeed. She gives vague instructions and then grades you harshly on criteria she never set. Also, she uses outdated terms and explanations for sexuality content. She either needs to re-train for this class or stop teaching it. Take someone else if you can.

Exams are pretty easy if you study the power points and pay attention in class, the book is more supplemental for if you don't understand something. Lots of group work thats an easy A and she gives extra credit. Take her!

Dr. Wessel was super nice. She was very open during her lectures and could make any of the awkward topics seem normal and interesting. Lots of group assignments which boosted your grade, and tests were pretty easy.

Class was so boring with easycommon sense information. No technology allowed in her class. Took attendance beginning of each class by sign in sheet. Group assignments with one group paper. So boring I didn't even take notes. 8 point grading scale making it hard to get an A with no plus or minus. Tests were easy if you read the power points.

She has a no electronics rule (but mid-year she turns a blind eye usually). Her emails are usually rude, or have a passive aggressive tone. Her class is pretty boring but attendance is mandatory. It is an easy A if you look over her power points which she posts online. Be warned. The people you sit near will probably be your permanent group.

The professor is just kinda rude as in won't let you pee during class NO LAPTOPS or cellphone. Her lectures are boring, however, her tests are relatively straightforward and a B is possible as long as you scan her online slides and turn in the assignments. The class could be really interesting but it's not in depth and it's stuff I know from life.
