Dr. Grant loves her job, don't get scared off by her passion. Excellent teacher, but don't expect to get higher than a B- on your essays. Extremely difficult marker (really), but is always willing to help and loves talking to students 1:1. Only take her classes if you are willing to work hard for those grades. She expects masters level papers.

Dr. Grant is not a prof I would take again, but its easy to see why others like her so much. She is very enthusiastic about what she is teaching, but she can at times be patronizing and annoying. Required to read three books in two months which is a lot. Dominates seminars as well. Grades things about 5% lower than the average history prof

took 220A and B with Dr. Grant fantastic! Lectures are very intriguing, and she is very passionate about British history. She doesnt really like when people ask her questions during the class, but at the same time really wants some feedback (nodding, murmuring) that the class is taking in what shes saying. 100% would take her class again!

"Who said history is boring?!" This is one of her favourite quotes, and she backs it up with engaging lectures. Prof's feedback is thorough - she will often type her critique. Prof will support anyone eager to learn. Her classes are no walk in the park, but the material is well presented and it all comes together in the end. Excellent professor!

Favourite prof! Really passionate about what she teaches, yells sometimes but only to get her point across. Feed back for all assignment is awesome and writes out everything you need to improve on to make your work better. Looking forward for more classes she teaches. Taking history because of her

Grant is an amazing prof! I took probably 6 courses with her and they were all amazing. HSTR 220B was the course that inspired me to switch majors to History. She tends to get frustrated when people don't answer her questions but the trick is that they are as easy as they seem. She isn't trying to make you look dumb. Just say The Great Reform act.

Mariel's war seminar, we had 5 students altogether. She challenged us every week to see the material from all perspectives. I felt like a total dunce some days, but she kept pushing us to deeper understanding. It was quite amazing really. The research paper was fun to do, you can pretty much pick your topic. She likes primary sources. Amazing prof.

Although the textbook and amount of reading in this course was very heavy and often difficult to get through, the fantastic lectures are really what made it worthwhile. Lots of fascinating information to learn and really clearly shows what is going on. Her seminars are quite helpful too (although prepping for them is difficult). Really a great prof

Well, she's very knowledgable about British History. She knows the finer details and bigger picture of periods that she teaches. She's passionate too. Actually yelled through one lecture in the term (which was uncomfortable). On the whole, I'd say as a prof she is eccentric, passionate about the material, and willing to help.

Mariel Grant is a great prof, she did me a HUGE favor by giving me advice on how to do my essay. Her lectures are great and to the point, she can get off topic at times but she usually brings it back fairly quickly. For the midterm she gave us a clear outline of what we could expect & it was easy. Watch out on essays though, she's a hard marker.

She is a good lecturer, but beware come essay time. Extremely hard marker who injects her own views of history into marking, and has marking expectations way beyond a 100-level course.

Marial Grant gives interesting lectures and definitely makes you think more deeply into large events in history. Her class is engaging, but often felt she treated the students like children. Overall wasn't a fan of Marial Grant...

Extremely poor grading system in most of her classes- midterm, paper, and a final. Unclear requirements, especially with 100 level courses. Abstract reasoning and thinking makes her courses more work then worth.

Great prof, she is over the top enthusiastic about Britain in the early 20th century. She is a good marker on papers and the final wasn't hard at all. Don't be intimidated by her craziness, I definitely recommend her.

Mariel is a great prof. She is very, very passionate about her subject and her enthusiasm is addictive. Loves the textbook but I found it was unnecessary to read it as the topics covered by readings and in class are usually different and she only tests on what is said in lectures. If you get a chance, take a class with her!!!

Her lectures are obviously extremely lively and entertaining, but I found that she could be patronizing and tended to treat us like children. Seminars were awful, she dominated the discussion and intimidated everyone so much as to quash participation. Also... BRUTAL at marking papers.

Grant is a great prof. Lectures are a must; books are actually novels that give context for the time period and are really useful. She's tough, but her criticism is always helpful. Her lectures, videos, novels, and clips will keep you interested for sure. She is a nut, but it's Brit History and you'd have to be a nutter anyhow.
