Comment:
Avoid this class/professor combination at all costs. Halpern has little to no grasp on a road map for the course, and learning is done primarily by reading the book. He is unable to use lecture time effectively and lacks the ability to explain concepts. The labs are a lot of work and there is insufficient time to do them well.

Worst prof I've ever had. He's completely disorganized, doesn't understand the material and his slides usually make no sense. Most classes, he gets distracted and wastes the entire class off on a tangent. I've learnt nothing from him all semester but luckily the textbook is good.

He's brilliant for sure; very smart. He is a terrible instructor though. He is not at the same frequency as his students and thinks that they should be able to do anything he is able to do. He is terribly disorganized and won't listen to suggestions. I would avoid if possible.

Extremely confusing and disorganized lectures. He's nice and seems to care about the students, but unfortunately can't explain the material. I ended up getting a decent mark, but I don't feel like I learned much.

He is extremely disorganized and has unreal expectations for some of the projects. He is a very tough marker and leaves no room for improvement. When you ask him questions he usually doesn't answer them, but just talks about random things and wastes your time.

Brilliant brilliant man, but disorganized in his teaching. His exams are fair and he is always willing to help. Genuinely a nice guy, so if you can live with being slightly lost in lectures you'll make it through his class. Make an effort to speak to him outside of class and you'll definitely start liking him more.

His teachings is all over the place and he is very disorganized in notes, exams, homework and other. Take any other prof, because with him you won't even want to go to the lecture, but if you do, you'll regret it. Way too boring and messy.

OMG! I have always found physics challenging but interesting and have got good grades. This professor make me want to pull my hair out every class! No structure, disorganized lectures, and you are left completely unprepared for the homework. You'd think UBC could do better!

Extremely disorganized, no syllabus uploaded, nor is his website updated in a timely manner (lecture note still not uploaded after 3 weeks of classes, and assignments usually released just a few days before the due date). Me and my friends even sent him multiple emails, with no response as of yet (3 weeks into course now). Absolutely Ridiculous.

idk... he rambles to no end, i mean he's a great guy and all, but you really have no idea what he's talking about, I got 99% in physics 200 and basically didn't have any idea taking this class. You can totally study for it yourself, but then what's the point of a teacher?

This guy is a world-renowned physicist but wow, he is incredibly disorganized and his lectures are kind of painful to listen to. Luckily his tutorials in P309 aren't exactly mandatory, however I go just because he's pretty funny sometimes. During the remote log-in lab exams he completely forgot about a group an hour into the exam.

Be prepared to learn on your own. His lectures are a buildup from the stuff in the textbooks. don't bother going to class if you havent done the stuff ahead of time.

Mark is brilliant. He presents challenging material that really makes you think in different ways and apply your knowledge, which ultimately gives you a much better understanding of what you are learning. I would highly recommend Mark to anyone who shares even a fraction of his fascination with physics.

He really is a nice guy & a physicist if u ever saw one, but he's one of those profs where the eq only work out in his head, u will have to teach urself the course but he will scale, ps. he misplaced my final for a WHILE so NOT ORGANIZED but he belongs in NASA, should teach brainiacs ONLY

Mark was one of the most inspirational profs I had, he really cares about people learning what he loves. But his class is a lot of work and usually talking to him on the side and doing readings ahead of time makes all the difference with how you do in the course. He's absolutely brilliant and not egotistical.
