I found the material more interesting than I expected to. That's the primary reason that I enjoyed the class, not because Johnson's lectures were super exciting. They were pretty dry. If you like learning about art history, you'll probably enjoy it somewhat. Be prepared to do a lot of memorization for the quizzes and tests.

HATED this class. thought it would be a good alternative to Civ I- don't make my mistake!! This is a rote memorization course- powerpoints every week are so boring, you just have to memorize works of art and their corresponding period for a quiz each week and 3 exams. Way more work than it's worth for a general credit.

Professor Johnson is great. The only reason people don't like his class is because they don't pay attention. If you listen you will hear all of his jokes and he is hilarious. His jokes are snarky and sarcastic and you can tell he loves what he teaches. The tests are way doable if you just memorize what he gives you beforehand in the review!

Professor Johnson is very dry in his lectures. He is willing to answer all questions, but he is not engaging at all (it's hard to stay awake!). His TAs are tough graders and all the tests are all written response and almost solely about memorization which means you forget what you learned very quickly (which is too bad!). Flashcards are a must.

The test are worth the most. You are at the complete mercy of how the TA grading you is feeling that that. So boring. And I love art.

Make sure you know all the things on study list, make sure you know how to spell every word(even it is not in English), and make sure you google every single picture of all the architectures(interior and exterior).

Mark is THE literal MAN. Loved this class more than life itself -- and I'm not even interested in art or history in the least bit. Professor Johnson's style is bursting with passion and a wealth of knowledge masked under a dry, tired facade. His humor is abrupt , ridiculous and often a bit cheesy/dark. 10/10 would take again.

Extremely boring and monotone. Lectures are very specific and he talks way too fast to catch any of it. Tests are like answering twelve essay questions and they're in class.

Class is nothing but a PowerPoint slide narrated in a dry fashion. You can tell that he's been doing this for years, and not in a good way. Seems like a nice enough guy, but I haven't really enjoyed this class.

Lectures are SO boring. He knows what he is talking about, but doesn't make it very interesting. Very dry speaker- it's like he's putting himself to sleep sometimes.3 exams and 3 term paper assignments (10 page paper due at end of semester) are all the grades. Tests are graded very tough. (got marked down for writing 'probably')

Not gonna lie, ancient art is not my favourite, but I actually really enjoyed this class. Lots of people thought the lectures were dry and played on Facebook the whole time and then got mad when they didn't get a good grade. The lectures are okay and if you actually pay attention you will learn a lot. Tests require hard work to memorize artwork.

BEWARE! Mark Johnson is booooooooring. When compared to other teachers, he really doesn't give the passion that Martha does. I would avoid taking him as much as possible! I only took this class because he teaches the two options for it. Otherwise, I avoided him like the plague! DO NOT TAKE 201 or 202 from him! Go with someone else! He is a nice guy

Mark Johnson is one of the worst professors I've ever had. He shows no interest in students. His lectures are dead boring, and he doesn't even seem to care about his own subject. I am passionate about art history, but he almost ruined it for me. I can't even imagine taking this class if I didn't already love the material. Take it from someone else!

This was the most ridiculous class ever. Your grade depends on three tests and one research paper. Period. His tests are very nit picky and it all depends on what he says in class. He is very boring and monotone, staying awake is a challenge in his class. I would not recommend taking this class from him.

This was probably the hardest and most confusing class I have ever taken. Johnson is a boring, monotone teacher and everyone falls asleep in class without fail. His tests are ridiculously hard and your whole grade depends on them. I would not recommend taking this for an easy GE.

Boring lectures, but easy to follow if you use the guide he provides online while listening to the lecture. I recommend using your laptop to take notes with the guide, and then when it gets slow go on facebook haha. Test are hard and limited to the TA's knowledge, so study before tests. He curves the class a few points at the end of the semester.

I loved the fact that there is no busy work in this class! (Early Christian/Byzantine Art) One research paper, one midterm, one combined midterm/final and that's IT. No textbook, no readings. Attendance is not required, but since everything on tests comes from lecture, go to class or get notes if you can't. If you memorize well, you'll get an A!

He's my favorite professor in the art history department! I found 201 to be very manageable and easy. There's no quizzes and he has awesome insight and knowledge in the subject. I would take more classes from him!

Mark is such a nice guy, and I love his classes. He is a little monotone, but he has a dry sense of humor that's really funny. His classes aren't hard as long as you attend the lecture-tests are 100% lecture based. The paper wasn't bad: just follow the guidelines and go to him if you have any questions or need help.

Professor Johnson is very knowledgeable when it comes to the subject. He is boring to listen to, but adds some dry humor every once in a while. For the tests be sure to take excellent notes because the test is based on his lectures NOT the book. Go to the TA's study sessions because they will tell you everything you need to know for the test.
