I took 2 courses with her in the 1980s. I went on to grad studies in history at SFU & McGill. Dr. Legates is one of the finest, most demanding, fair and knowledgeable profs I have ever had. Yes she had high expectations, but she was always fair and made us think.

Some don't want to see beyond their North American narrow mindness and are simply after grades. Marlene shows the culture of the period studied, going beyond stale facts, through music and art. She has stories to tell: she met Picasso, J.F.K., was in Chile in 1973 before the coup, has travelled all over the world, got her PHD at Yale. She's great!

Wow! That's what I say about this teacher and not in a good way. She goes way off topic all the time, treats students like 4 year olds, and honestly what is this a history of music class? God playing music for 20 minutes everyday about god knows what. I do not recomend this teacher, and I have dropped out of history altogether because of her.

She is petty, mean spirited, egocentric and caustic. Her class was fairly easy though because she tells you what will be on the exams.

Comment:
Very poor teacher. Loses assignments. Treats students as children. e.g. pauses class and stares at those who make any sound. Demands that you know HER interpretations of the various historical events. Plays irrelevant music in class for up to 10 minutes in a 90 minute course. She would do well either in an elementary school or a 3rd/4th class.

See, the problem with most people who go to capilano is that they don't actually go intending to learn anything or do any work. She's tough, but if you actually make the effort you will get a good mark (I got an A+ last year and I'm going to get an A something this semester). And yes, she always thinks she's right, but it's because she is.

I had her in '01, and I do agree with some of the comments. She is brutal. She flicks the lights (annoying), and she does teach unorthodox theories as if they were factual. But, my buddies and I still did well, and I have had worse profs. since then... all in all, I didn't mind her. It is college afterall (a supposed University equivolent).

Very biased, take this class if you want to do everything how she wants it to be, regardless of whether it's correct or not.

she was really good as far as im concerned, i liked her teaching style and she made you do the work. if you didnt do the work, your screwed, and i like that because it forces a discipline on you. she was also VERY helpful, you just have to go talk to her. and dont be late,

I took the course out of genuine interest but her teaching style completely turned me off. She treated us like an elementary school class and gave us assignments of equal level. I was not impressed with her level of knowledge or teaching style, and every person I conversed with in my class shared this view. At least she's a nice person.

Okay, I was TERRIFIED of taking this course because of the ratings. However, either she completely changed since the past ratings of her, or else she really is NOT that bad. She knows her stuff VERY well, she has a sense of humour which may rub people wrong, plus is rather strict. I think she maybe more suited to 3rd/4th years of Univ than college.

Illogical, Irrational and AWFUL! She has no interest in intelligent philosophical conversation unless it is in direct relation to her book! She uses a book she wrote to teach the course with! CONFLICT OF INTEREST??!?!!

I took three classes with this instructor many years ago, and still vividly remember lectures/readings. In retrospect I have only admiration for her: tough and difficult, but perhaps the most effective, dynamic, even brilliant lecturer I have ever seen (in 12 yrs of post-secondary education). Inspired me to go on in the field.
