Comment:
I get along with Marvin extremely well on a personal level and I still keep in touch with him. But even I have to admit that he's the most brutal hard-ass of a prof I've ever had. His class was also the most informative I've ever taken, though, so if you don't mind the (very) hard work, take his class. You won't regret it.

Marvin is a real personality, radical yes, but surprisingly down to earth on most things. Something of a legend around Carleton, no degree there is complete without one of his classes. He marks hard and makes you work hard, but thats no bad thing. "My mother named me Marvin not Prof. Glass," nice unpretentious way to start a class. Cheers Marvin!

He is insane, pretentious, full of his own opinions - but at the same time, I think he genuinely enjoys teaching and is good at explaining complex ideas step by step. He changed my mind about a couple of things... but actually argued that small children are not human! And will say stuff like, "Of course there is no God" in class.

Marvin explains things very very well. Is very good at conveying the material. HOWEVER, he is unbelievably mean, unsympathetic, and slightly rude. Assigns essay topics appropriate for a PhD level, and then marks the papers brutally. This makes the course extremely hard to do well on. I support communist ideas, but I don't recommend him!!

Comment:
Based on my observations, Marvin has a very quantum mechanical approach to marking. If he likes what you write, you get an A, if he doesn't, you get a D. In order to get an A+, make sure you understand the rudiments of historical materialism, be thorough and inquisitive in formulating your paper, and DON'T SKIMP ON THE LENGTH (ie. ~ 20-30 pages).

One of the more difficult markers teaching at Carleton and the courseload for his classes is extremely intense. That said, he is one of the best philosophy profs I've had. He is clear, smart and able to convey complex ideas really well. If you're up for the challenge, his class is a must, but be prepared to do more work than you've done before.

I hate this man- so pretentious, thinks he's so radical- all he wants is for everyone to agree with his views- I've seen him kick people out of the class for disagreeing- seriously- maybe this guy was cool back in the day, but he clearly hates almost all of his students- terrible prof

Comment:
This is a philosophy course. You are supposed to question everything in a philosophy course. But when you question Marvin's often-incoherent views, you get streams of nonsense. Try asking him about abortion one day. He actually argues that if everyone could see into a woman's womb, the fetus would be considered a human being. Wow.

There's no way around it - he knows his stuff when it comes to Marxist philosophy, but a lot of the time he seems more concerned with criticizing his colleagues, the administration, etc.. I went to go see him about a paper once and he was down right mean, not approachable at all. Never again!

I must apologize for those leaving a bad comment for they most likely did poorly in the class and are lookig for revenge. That said, this is not a 'Mickey Mouse' course and you better expect to do a lot of reading. Marvin is opinionated, however, this is self-professed in the first class as a warn

Almost-hilariously caught up in what a "radical" he is and how Administration doesn't get him. Essay questions very complicated but also very vague, and he's a tough marker. Complained he didn't have enough time to teach everything, but only taught 2 1/2 hours instead of 3 every week. Disappointing.

He expects too much from second year students. He organized the class poorly and did not meet his objectives: he let class our early, but complained he didn't have enough time to cover material. Didn't get essays back before drop date and blamed administration when it was his fault. Avoid.

Probably the only radical left on Campus, good source for Marxist-Leninist thought. Class is hard, and one should read all of Marx's philosophical texts as well as Engels and Lenin (or the ones recommended) to suceed, understand Historical Materialism! Cheers

I liked him...then I got to know him. Won't except any views other than his own, even if his views make no sense. If his word is so much better than all of these philosophers that we are reading than why are we not reading anything he wrote? Did he write anything? He has no Ph.d !!!!!

What kind of horrid little man fails 40% of the class on their first paper in a 2000-level philosophy course? That seems a little extreme to me. What's worse, he announced this with a hint of glee in his voice. He only wants to make himself feel important by invalidating the worth of others' opinion

marvin's notes are yellow, they are so old! his knowledge of feminism is so outdated, and he refuses to acknowledge any opinion different than his own. it makes me really sad to think that some students might be introduced to feminism by him. he is by far the worst prof. i have ever had.

I signed up for his class hoping to learn about Marxist philosophy. Instead, I received a barrage of his opinions of the university, of the government, of institutions in general. He's an arrogant, condescending, spiteful little man.
