Comment:

I wish that I had taken this class before I went to Asia. The textbook and assignments are very clear. I particularly liked the 5 postings where we could pick object not in the text to discuss with the other students. She really cares about the students and met with me several times in person even though it was an on line course.

The online discussions were a bit intense; I was never sure what feedback she would give me, or any of the other students. Not much room to stray from what her opinion of the subject matter was. Lots of work but learned a lot.

I took Women and Art online, I loved the class but she gave no guidance/explination of what she wanted from the online discussions or papers. One bad mark and it was almost impossible to recover from. Still, she's passionate about the course content but the discussion posts were heavy (one per week).

Comment:

Great course and prof. She will get back to you asap. Lots of work (weekly online discussions, two essays and an online exam), but definitely manageable and not terribly difficult. I think if she sees you are engaging with the material, you will do well. Would take again for sure.

She is really helpful and reply to email really fast. Her feedback is fair enough. I love this course even if I'm not a fine arts student. I am really into it. Very interesting! I would highly recommend this professor! I would probably get a B+ on this course.

Her notes are inconsistent with what is on the exam and the exercises. Useless exercises. There was no guidance on the paper. I am surprised by how many students like her. I am graduating this semester and she was the worst prof I had my entire degree.

Internationally respected expert brilliantly executes special topic course previously unknown to this student! Going beyond typical 'canned' lectures, her expertise provided a deeper understanding of contemporary Chinese artists. Students' opinions were encouraged and respected. It was a privilege and honour to have been under her tutelage.

I have never met a more understanding, helpful, and enthusiastic professor in all of my time at the U of M. I have now taken 3 classes with her and I hope she eventually moves from assistant director to director as she really truly cares about the SOFA and the students! Goes above and beyond for everyone! Love love love her!

She is the nicest, most caring prof you're likely to find, but her lectures can be meandering. At times they're just a series of anecdotes from her travels set to slides. She doesn't believe in the school bookstore and students must track down required textbooks themselves. By far the best prof for online-only classes, however.

i took almost all of my courses to do with histoy with Mary Ann. she was always willing to talk - even on assignments for other profs! and she is known for emailing students back at 2 in the morning the day before a test. in short, she is awsome! she is fair! you will not fail if you try hard.. and talk to her about any troubles your having. do it.

Like everyone else has said..Amazing prof. Super nice. I couldn't have imagined a better way to introduce myself to art, and she increased my interest in absolutely everything.
