I really liked her as a person, but the class was kind of boring. I feel like I learned more about all the stuff I didn't know about the Middle East. There is a ton of reading, some of it really good and some not. She really knows her stuff and you can learn a lot from her as long as you do what you need to do and pay attention.

Comment:

I'm shocked by the bad reviews! I had a great experience being taught by her and was offered so much knowledge on the topic of Palestinian history. Grading was not an issue either. Of course the lectures were boring at times, but what lectures aren't?! its not a comedy show, Its the history of a very complex region. Would definitely recommend!

The poster below is obviously Prof Wilson herself, it could be none other. She is arrogant, snubs anyone with a question, knowledgeable about some specific topics but ignorant about a lot of others, TOTALLY unconcerned about her students, and overall super cranky; DO NOT RECOMMEND!

She is an amazing professor. I had no interest in the middle east before I took her class. Beyond that, she will do whatever it takes to help her students do well in the class. Honestly, if you don't do well you can only blame yourself for not taking advantage of all of the resources she offers. She also really cares about her students.

awful. just awful. if I was smart, I would've looked her up on this fantastic website, but I was not. after weeks of putting up with this terrible professor, I finally looked her up on here and most of the comments were dead on. Arrogant. Rude. Simply rambles on different historical tangents, without telling you what you need to know. Terrible.

She is by far the worst professor I've ever had (and, perhaps, worst professor at UMass). She's an unproductive scholar, and her knowledge of the medieval near east is dismal at best. She's also arrogant, classist (although tries to pretend otherwise), and cannot really connect with people. AVOID!

Amazingly rude when she doesn't agree with a student's opinions or interpretation. Has a large amount of knowledge on the topics, however is sassy and skeptical when students offer more input and ideas. Unapproachable, belittling, and again amazingly rude in her paper comments.

I would not take this class unless you have prior knowledge to the subject. Like another rating said, the teacher teaches you like your five but expects great literary pieces out of you for papers and homework. Attendance is mandatory and some homework questions are meant to trick students. Do not take this class!!!

I ignored the warnings about this class. I wish I hadn't. The professor treats the class like we are unintelligent, yet grades us like grad students. She doesn't make expectations clear, yet expects you to read her mind. She asks you an open ended essay question, but gives you a C if you do not choose the right answer. She is full of contradictions

For an Oxford graduate I would have thought that she would be more intelligent than to succumb to prejudice and bias. My parents are professors and the stories I give them about Wilson disgusts them. Do not take this class.

Good god. I wish I had read the ratings for this professor before I took her class. No joke, take these to heart. I had a 4.0 before this class, but her grading MAKES NO SENSE. This class is extremely boring and disorganized and this from someone who loves ME history. Please, save yourself, don't take it. Change your major. Please.

Worst class I have ever taken at UMass. I am a senior and have been to the middle east. She is an embarrassment to that culture. I took this class because I wanted to enjoy a class about something I could relate to. The only thing I could relate to in this class was the other students and our complete dislike for Mary Wilson.

the first class, she took 20 minutes to get the projector to work. when she finally gets the screen up, her desktop is a mess. she took attendance out loud for the next 15 minutes. your first impression will be correct: she is incredibly boring and disorganized, even with the interesting topic of middle east history. can't use technology either.

I made an account just to warn people how terrible this professor is. She requires attendance, most boring lectures ive ever been to, and she is an impossible grader. She is not helpful at office hours and this gened is WAY too much work. She is also very unorganized and tries to use technology that she doesnt know how to use.

I am a junior and took this class to cover my HS & G gened requirements because there was no discussion. BIG MISTAKE! I have never gotten a D on a paper in my life and that is all she would give me. I know journalism majors in the class who were asked to re-write their papers. Her grading is rediculously hard.

Not a great professor. Lectures are broken and very scattered. She grades ridiculously hard. This class is not meant to be a 100 level class. She assigns a lot of reading...I guess she thinks that this class can consume all of our time. Take another class with another professor if possible.
