One of the best courses I ever took. Very participatory and lots of work, so you must be prepared for that. I learned so much it's amazing. Not just about poetry but publishing. Best of all: how to give and take critique: So useful in all aspects of life. Your creativity will flourish. She's invested in seeing you become a good writer.

Mary Dalton, is somewhat interesting as a person, a well established poet, and knows poetry. She fails to transfer the knowledge she has onto students in the area of poetry. I feel like I did not learn much more than what I already knew going into the class. It was interesting to get involved with more people interested in poetry, the class mates.

Mary really knows what she is taking about when it comes to poetry, but she is a hard grader. She isn't always that nice, she's kind of unpredictable in that way. She often doesn't answer emails, and is not very flexible when you need help. We had 2 in class essays, a group project, a final paper and a final exam, which I found to be alot.

I've never given such a negative review. I tried to find something about her that I enjoyed so I will say that she is passionate about poetry. Unfortunately, unless you are equally passionate about poetry and speak up often in class, she won't even smile towards your general direction. She seems to chose whom to dislike from the beginning.

As long as you attend class and express your thoughts in the same manner as she does then you shall do well. She tends to make you look like an idiot if you state something unorthodox. Attend class or she will point out how you weren't there in front of everyone.

She is an all right prof. She is easily confused at times. Her classes don't exactly enlighten you about the stories but if you give her what she wants for essays she is a very easy marker. To do good just give the answer, prove it,and give examples.Don't use ideas from the outside world or ideas that can not be directly proven in your essays.

Note: I was just told I haven't shown the aptitude to take the advanced creative writing course so be warned of my bias. Mary is a wonderful lady. She's fun to talk to. Her teachings can be hard to follow but she's expressing the truth. The biggest downfall in the course is that she doesn't clearly express her expectations but I'd still recommend.

She is the worst prof, i've ever had. mono-toned,and goes off topic fairly quickly. Her opinion is always right, no one else, when a student speaks up to give their opinion on the short story she calls them down to the dirt and tells them their wrong. The short stories she picked for this course was horrible to read & her quizzes are very detailed

Terrible professor. Her classes made little sense and the class is called Irish Literature yet she focuses almost solely on poetry, so if you don't like poetry (I don't) don't take this class

Mary Dalton is one of those profs that people need to stay away from, period. She insists that her students speak up to get participation marks, but calls them out when they do- not very encouraging. She'll drag your presentation through the dirt and then arbitrarily assign a grade that doesn't seem to reflect her comments at all. Horrible!

You sit down in your first class and after a few minutes a little voice inside your head tells you to run . . . run as fast as you can. LISTEN TO IT!

I really think that MUN should reconsider letting this woman teach. She is degrading, insulting, and treats her students as though they are stupid and have never taken an English course before.I have never felt so disrespected as a student in my life and I have never held such lack of respect for a teacher. If you can,, avoid her!

She is both rude and impossible to get along with. She thinks that, as a poet, her opinion is always right and yours is always wrong. She is completely out to lunch with her student expectations, and, furtheremore, she can be just plain mean. She treats students with disrespect and even admits in class that she knows no one likes her. AVOID!!!!!!!!

Very easy to fall asleep in class. Class work is minimal - only a few in-class essays, one term paper and a few small assignments. Little class discussion, only the prof talking in front forever. Seems world-weary every day. I got a good mark by "showing my enthusiasm" for writing and analyzing!

GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!!! She's nuts. You aren't right, she is. So don't try to tell her any other possibilities to anything! But there may be no escaping this since she'll call upon you even if you don't offer an opinion. Then she'll get mad at your response. She's cranky 24/7. Menopause maybe? PMS? Or just a crab ass? I think the latter.

Now, now now... let's not get too nasty with poor Mary. Yes, she's a tad quirky - but she rewards true effort and literary passion. Really she's just like a lot of other profs - just figure out what she wants and then give it to her. After all, part of the university experience is pulling off an A in spite of it all, ya?

Picture it: outside - it's dusk, inside - it's warm and dim, (no lights on because the flourecent bulbs bothered her) only the hum of a fan from inside the ceiling to interupt the dreadful monotony that is this class..zzzzz. No discussion, really boring. If you have to take this class grab a nap in the library and drink lots of water beforehand.
