I bought a total of 4 books for this class! His whole lectures are based on the readings. No HW or assignments. I personally hated this bc your entire grade depends on 1 written midterm and 2 final papers. He tries really hard to engage his students and is clear about his expectations.

History at the Movies. 6 credit class, lots of reading and papers every week. Don't take if you are lazy or have heavy course load. NOT a fun, easy class. You will learn a lot and very insightful. Subject matter is emotionally challenging and some movies have disturbing imagery. Worth taking if you have the chance but you will be challenged.

His lectures are more of a conversation more than anything, so it is very hard to take notes. The powerpoints he uses are just pictures so its not that useful either. I failed the mid term and had to selective withdraw

3 major essays prompts are given up front in the syllabus, which is really nice. A lot of reading. Wasn't that interested in Latin American history but he's good at drawing interest. Gives a lot of feedback on papers. If you have, class Mon, reading questions for Wed class is due early Tues, which is annoying because it only give you 24hrs to read.

He is a decent teacher at best. Although passionate about the subject, his lectures are incredibly boring and he gives out a ton of reading. His comments on paper are not really helpful. You learn most of the material from the books. He does give out study guides for his exam and if you do the work, you should get a solid B.

Karush is extremely passionate and educated in his field; he knows what he's talking about. It's a lot of reading, but what do you expect in an honors course. Make sure to do the reading and speak in class discussions to get full participation. Hard grader when it comes to essays, midterm/final consist of essays, DO THE STUDY GUIDES! great teacher

Prof Karush might seems okay at first, but he actually has a lot to improve. Although his class is suppose to be a "seminar", it always feel more like a guided conversation, where he aims to push his beliefs on the students. Careful, if you are persistent with your views about certain topics, you will likely get on his bad side. A vert strange man.

Professor Karush is the best! He has so much enthusiasm about L.A. history, makes the class a fun environment. Going to class is a must though he explains everything in detail. He is so hot too sometimes it?s hard to concentrate. Take him, he is a great professor and the class is not boring at all.

Professor Karush is one of the best professors I have had. Going in to the class I did not want to even learn about L.A. history and was taking it to get a requirement out of the way, since taking his classes I have decided to take on a L.A. studies minor. His tests are hard but fair, if you study you will do fine.

A decent teacher. I think he should be able to make the class more interesting. Lectures were pretty boring but the discussion part wasn't that bad. There is no reason to not get at least a B in the class. I preferred his TA, Steven Scott, I found him a bit more interesting. Overall, it was a very informative class. I would recommend Karush.

I loved his teaching style. He makes the class interesting and fun to go to. It doesn't talk just at you, he involves the students in the discussions. He wants his students to succeed. There were 3 quizzes, midterm, final, and one paper. Not bad for a history class! Read the book and you will get thru the class with an A!

Great professor! Class attendance is not required but the class is interesting. You can get by without doing the readings- he has reading quizzes but they are announced and you know what they are on. He gives a study guide for each exam (midterm and final). I learned a lot from him!
