I didn't expect to enjoy this class nearly as much as I did. The discussion was at a high level and Dr. Hines kept things on point and very interesting.

Nice lady, super disorganized class. You can tell she really knows her stuff, but the delivery and class structure needs some serious work.

Comment:
This class is severely unorganized. The assignments are all over the place as are the class discussions which I feel I take very little away from despite contributing to them daily. Dr. Hines makes it clear that she doesn't always have a lesson plan for the day and often just wings it with a fruitless discussion. Nice lady, but her class is a mess.

I dropped this class because I was looking for an in depth discussion class over the literature. We barely covered the book, instead we talked about tropes and how the book was banned for two classes. I tried to bring up an interesting theme in class and the teacher didn't talk about it, its like she didn't know how to analyze or direct discussion.

Rude, arrogant. If your suggestion/idea doesn't match her expectations, she will berate you.

She's pretty chill, but I guess I can see why other reviewers don't care for her (class is a little disorganized, but she seems to be working on it). She doesn't mind late work and she doesn't give "minuses" in grades (she said she feels they are belittling). She's also very knowledgeable in her field. The only negative is she's slow to grade.

I like Professor Hines as a person, but her course was a mess. I earned an A, but I cannot say that I know anything more about that period of American literature than I did before. She was frequently late, off topic, and disorganized. She forgot to hand back half of our research proposals. I am eager to learn and this was 4 credits wasted.

The course content was opaque, and the professor is a bit of a snob. Although I know the class in itself in difficult, I feel like she was making it unnecessarily more complicated. Would not recommend.

This woman is a fantastic teacher. I was really discouraged at first because of how hard she grades papers but that just made it all the more exciting when I got a 98%. I certainly learned a lot from her in this class and enjoyed the format.

I'm certain she is the only human walking this great green earth to have taken a poetic term and turned it into a Lynyrd Skynyrd joke. Professor Hines rules!

Took a grad class- it was amazing! She is organized and very interesting, casual, an easy to talk to expert! I highly recommend. I went from having a casual interest in the topic to falling in love with it after this course. The syllabus was quite challenging, but that is to be expected of a grad course (and a committed professor).

Maude runs grad classes pretty casually, and because of that sometimes strayed off-topic, though the digressions were always academic in nature. She'd be a great Jeopardy contestant--she knows a little about everything, it seems. She's also ALWAYS busy on committees and things but always makes time for her students.

Took an American Studies class from her and was pleased to find it was on the "Roaring Twenties." Loved the literature, especially Harlem Renaissance, and exploration of local art deco buildings . Only downside was the insanely too difficult census assignment. Also does attendance by notecards.

Comment:
This class was ridiculous. I went into it thinking I was going to learn about America, I mean the class is American Studies. Instead we researched our neighborhood in the 1920s and did a building sketch of a building that was built in the 20s. Class only focused on the 1920s and did not teach much about American Studies but more on local places.

This class focused on the 1920's. She was rather unorganized with when assignments were due & the syllabus was off half the time. However her assignments aren't that hard. She grades pretty fair if you do the work. Some parts of her lectures were pretty interesting and engaging. She just needs to work on organization. No final & just a project.

Very excited about what she is teaching. Not very good at teaching. She is unclear and scattered. She has high expectations but is ambiguous about what she wants in an assignment. Do not take a class from her.

Comment:
Intolerable. Previous commentors were right: Treasure map style syllabus, irrelevant assignments, unfocused discussion, and outrageous grading policy. The class is supposed to be about the 1920s, but instead of studying important figures and movements, we do building sketches for which you get penalized for not being an artist and census maps. Barg
