Dr. Dowling is awesome! I took her Class & Gender in Ancient Society class in Oxford and loved it. I'm a science major so I wasn't really sure what to expect from an SMU history class, but I really enjoyed the class and found it very manageable. Be sure to do the reading (or at least a SparkNotes reading) if you want to be able to participate.

Dr. Dowling is the most inspirational and helpful professor I've ever had. It's a TON of reading, but all very intentional and necessary to understand the course. She answers EVERY question asked and is such a wealth of knowledge. Offers 10 easy bonus points on the final grade so not too hard to get an A if you put in effort.

Best Teacher at SMU that I have had so far. She made me fall in love with Roman History and I looked forward to her class everyday. BUT it was a very hard class. Lots and lots of reading. I spent hours studying for her class, but it was all worth it in the end. Take her class if you love history!

Prof Dowling is an energetic and passionate teacher. Her enthusiasm is tangible and contagious. Very rewarding class. It was definitely the toughest history course I've taken thus far into my 3rd year.

Professor Dowling is great. She is very passionate about her work and wants everyone to do well. She will always provide examples and is very relatable. Be prepared to write a lot (She said and I quote "A good exam should make our hand hurt for days afterword) But it is truly rewarding and you will learn so much.

The class is tough if you're not a history or english major. Would not recommend if you just want to fulfill a pillar. I took the class just to fill up my schedule and I'm not either of those majors so it took some work. That being said, Mrs. Dowling is one of the best teachers I've had. Class is very interesting and you'll love Roman culture.

I've taken her twice at SMU (class/ gender and ancient rome) and LOVE HER. can not say enough good things. she is very passionate about the subject which she instills in her students. very helpful and wants you to do well. she demands a lot but you are rewarded in the end for your hard work. such a great lady and professor!

Wonderful professor and person. Very passionate about what she teaches. Likes to make you write long papers but she is very helpful with editing and telling you exactly what she wants if you make an appointment. No homework, quizzes, or tests. Greek mythology class. Awesome opportuinity if you need a perspective credit.

I made the mistake of taking one of her classes in my very first semester; it was a wake up call for me. Still, even if her class was difficult, it was very interesting- she is very passionate about what she teaches, and she is very helpful one-on-one.

Dowling is a great professor who really is passionate about what she teaches. She is very helpful and knows a ton about the subject. The only downside is that she assigns a ton of reading. I have had two classes with her and each class had nine books. I recommend her anyways.
