I had this professor for poetry class. I thought he was pretty much partial to liberal hippie looking students - as I guess that's what he seemed to be. He was willing/open to talk outside but I didn't feel it was helpful. It seemed more like I just wasn't writing what he wanted to read. I was truly dissappointed with this course.

I like Burns as a prof. Really interesting and from his class I am writing better poems. Don't use book but maybe 1 or 2 times thoughout the class, write 10 poems and very small and very easy random things throughout the year. Highly recommend!

He is a really interesting guy. He made me laugh. But he was too set in his way of writing. Nothing anyone wrote ever seemed good enough. He would criticize work to the point you really didn't even want to bring a poem in for him to read.

Had Prof Burns a few years ago. He is knowledgable. I learned a lot about explicating literature under him. Just do your work and you can easily make an A. He is demanding on paper presentations but will help you anytime. He is personable and you can get to know him

He never enjoyed much about what I wrote. I always felt somewhat itimidated by him and his criticism. I know my poetry has gotten much better since leaving his class. We write poetry for different reasons, being published was important to him, finding a deeper me was to me. I guess he failed to see that in my poems.

He's very cool, but it seems as though he has a monopoly on the basic structures and philosophies of writing poetry. If you disagree with his methods, you may run into some trouble(he's very literal and non-abstract in his poetry). Must play by his rules.
