Dr. Burton is a great teacher who truly loves his subject. His lectures may seem dull but they're extremely interesting, so pay attention! He's also pretty funny and has some good stories. Even if you aren't interested in sociology, he will MAKE you interested. If he wasn't retiring, I would say he's a must-sign-up-for professor.

Although this course was a lot of work and reading, it paid off in the end. Not an easy A by any stretch of the imagination, but I defiantly learned a lot more then I have in most of my other classes. Burton can be demanding and vague at times, but he's a very good guy overall and works with his students with anything.

Really nice guy! He wants you to do well. LOTS of homework--given every single class. The homework is meant to help you but can definitely be a pain. Theres 2 tests and 1 final. Study the review questions and you're set. Recommended if you're willing to work hard and go to class. If not, don't take.

Awesome guy, fun teacher. Learned a good amount, sociology can be annoying for most people because its just a core, but he is definately a friendly and helpful teacher who will work with you to get an A.

Comment:
This class is rediculous. Too much reading and writing for an intro class. Above that, the class was more about terrorism and different countries than societies and institutions. Papers are difficult, and he looks more at your style of writing than you're actual argument. The exams focus more on the text than actual key concepts.

I've had Dr. Burton for 3 classes now. He is one of the best prof's I've had at Loyola. He's a brilliant man. Yes there is a lot of reading and writing, but it's worth it. Class discussions are great in the upper levels and i have learned so much from him. Work hard and you'll do well. Def. take

I loved him. The class is hard- so if you dont have time for it I can see how it'd be a pain. Usually i dont recomend hard classes b/c who doesnt want an easy A? But you honestly learn so much. Hes a very valuable teacher with a lot to offer and such a nice guy. He provides a lot of materials for studying, so keep up and you'll be fine.

I graduated a few years ago, but I clearly remember Dr. Burton as one of the best profs I had in my 4 years. Yeah it's a bit of work, but in the long run it's definately worth it and he couldn't have been more helpful. The folks that whine about a lot of work are the same ones that are unemployed when college is over, trust me.

This teacher makes the class far too difficult. There is too much reading, too much writing, and too much confusion. The only good thing is that he gives study guides which are the tests, so just answer the questions on the study guide and you'll have all the answers for your exam.

The hefty (there was ALOT) reading load actually made class much more interesting because you could really particpate and remember the lectures. Working on the final paper was rough during the semester, but by the end, I was proud of my work and glad to have taken the class. I would take it again.

15 page term paper. hard tests. boring lectures. RIDICULOUS amounts of reading that make no sense. he will make you read his book...which makes no sense. this was an intro class that was taught like a grad class. do not take

Prof. Burton does not realize that his students take other classes. He teaches as if it is a grad class with no respect to students and their other work. He is not a fair grader in that his grades are more based on the person than on the actual work.

This class was boring and I really didn't learn much. I ended up falling behind because I couldn't get into the readings and didn't understand any of the concepts, which are not well explained in class. Not recommended for people who don't like economics.

Only whiney brats complain about a class being hard--it is college afterall. Prof Burton is challenging, but he also knows his stuff and teaches it well. Yes, he has high expectations--shouldn't he?
