I am an engineering major. I had Mike tutor me in Calculus 1,2,3, differential equations, engineering mathematics and engineering statistics. His degree was in nuclear physics, after graduation he went to business. I am writing this in response to the people who tell you he doesn't know math. Let me tell you without a doubt, Mike knows Math!

You don't need to go to class, but exams are based on lectures not textbook. Very good w/ concepts, a little difficult to understand the details.

If you're any sort of a math person, he's unbearable because he butchers the theory. Tests can be tricky. Don't go to class, just learn the formulas. Don't buy the textbook, you don't really need it.

Don't take him if you like math. He rarely goes into any underlying mathematical principles ("I go to my math dept friend and he told me to go to lunch & come back. Half an hr later he gave me this equation"). He makes you think he is bored in class or something (like "so you put sigma of x into this junk"). THE WORST EVER.

one of the best teachers at the B-school; lectures full with real-life examples; extremely coherent and detailed; if you want more than B, you have to go to class and to the Fri sessions with the TAs!!! tests are hard, so it is not enough to understand the material, YOU MUST SOLVE ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS FROM THE BOOK ON YOUR OWN!!!

This is a monopoly! Gordinier is the only professor who teaches both business statistics I and II. It's not fair that b-school students must take 2 classes with him which frankly are boring and unbearable. He doesn't give us the change to use excel in class and instead we are forced to take notes on it which is impossible!

Great teacher, uses lots of examples. Test questions come mostly from homeworks and practice exams (numbers usually get changed, but same question). If you go to class and take notes, you'll do very well

very systematic-goes over a topic in class, gives an example or two, and the exact same type of problem shows up on the hw/exam. don't need to go to class but learning from the book would be wasting your time with TONS of non-exam/hw stuff. no partial credit on exams-why he has a hard rep. tests are EXTREMELY PREDICTABLE and everything is curved.

Great at teaching, but gives really hard exams. I enjoy his lecture and learn a lot from them, but have to work hard and study a lot to do decently. He gives lots of examples, and is overall pretty fair. You must go to class to do well.

Personal Finance: Very good lecturer, entertaining (funny, cynical but good natured), knowledgeable...one of the best I've had. Very useful material (esp. for the future). Difficult exams but if you study hard and take his advice, you will do well. DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS AND EXAMS! Overall, excellent professor.

Took him for personal finance. Clear lectures, hard exams. You need the textbook to be fully prepared for exams. His political "agenda" reflects a cynical disillusionment with government; what he really pushes is using the life insurance agency for all your investing needs, while ignoring the overpromising and underdelivering of such activity.

Prof. Gordinier is one of the smartest person I have ever meet. he is very hardworking as well considering the amount of courses that he teaches every semester. His tests can be very difficult but as long as you keep on top of the maerial and homeworks you should be fine. Exams on QBA 1 seems to be a lot harder than QBA 2 though.

I think the class is not terribly difficult. Gordinier is a pretty good teacher and he makes things pretty clear, homeworks are not too difficult if you take your time and check your work a few times. Exams are pretty tough but are made a bit easier by the provision of a formula sheet. Pretty good class overall, required but still worth taking.

He's terribly boring and seems to think that what he is teaching is far more important than anything else we have or will ever learn. His general attitude is off-putting and the majority of the class swings a B without attending. You don't have a choice but to take with him, so just don't go and get a B. If you want an A... good luck.

Had him for QBA I/II and he is probably my favorite professor at Wash U. He is very clear in his explanations. Class is not that hard if you just come to class and study (the tests are very hard for QBA I, but they are on a curve). Love his how he is not PC and libertarian. Very funny.

Listen, the guys pompous. He's a brilliant guy and a professor at a university. He's going to have an ego. his tests are incredibly hard, but definitely fair. You see problems like them before (if you bother to do the practice midterm/final). Some of the questions on the final were word for word from the practice. Go to class, you'll do fine.

Personal Finance. He is a really funny guy. He throws in some very quoteworthy things into almost every lecture. I learned a lot in this class. Unfortunately, his tests were very tricky. There is a lot on them that is only in the book or not even there at all! My grade does not reflect how much I actually learned. Take it, but pass/fail.
