If you are not someone who is sharp in math or if you're unfamiliar with physics this will be a challenge for you. While Doc is very caring and willing to help his students as much as he can, the workload is very heavy and assignments are VERY lengthy! Best to get a tutor the minute you begin! Also do NOT rely on the forums for help!

I took his Physics 102 and I can handsdown say that he is a very caring Professor! Willing to go above and beyond to help anyone as long as you're willing to put in the effort and do your share. Be warned: the course is quite challenging! Anyone who is not the sharpest at math or who is unfamiliar with physics may struggle!

Amazing professor, I took his Physics of Light and Vision class. Hands down one of the best professors at UNCA. He is knowledgable, keeps the class very engaging and interactive, and is extremely helpful and accommodating. He is more than willing to help if you don't understand the material. It is kind of a lot of work and a bit difficult though!

This class was a blast. Don't be scared at all, but be prepared to put in a little elbow grease outside of the classroom. He created a website for this class and he doesn't make you buy a textbook. He keeps class really entertaining and he's super kind. I never dreaded going to this class once.

Before taking PHYS 101102, I thought I would dread going into the class each day (being a Management major)but no, not with Doc! I found his class to be super easy and fun! He makes it very apparent that he wants to help students and he is so caring and funny. I definitely wish I could take another class with him, definitely recommended class

One of the best professors I've ever had. Very passionate about physics, very understanding, and cares a lot about his students. He gives a lot of extra credit and help outside of class. This class is almost impossible to fail, not because its easy but because he's so helpful and there are so many resources to help the students.

A great teacher even if you don't enjoy physics. I struggled in this class because their was a lot of math involved but Ruiz is super helpful and forgiving. He often will give a day to go back and do any of the homework you missed. He keeps his lecture interesting by playing music, videos and doing demonstrations.

Flexible. Enthusiastic. Refreshing. Definitely take if you struggle with science. He enjoys teaching above anything and it reflects in everything he does. He is always accessible and always willing to accommodate to any personal hardships you may be facing that would hinder your work.

I highly recommend taking him if you're not a physics major. Physics majors may find him a bit too easy. He's fun and friendly, and keeps his class simple so anyone can enjoy it. If you need help he's pretty much always available. There's built in extra credit that you can do at any point during the semester. Would take again.

Doc really loves to help his students, even if it's to raise their grades. He gives extra credit for nearly everything, and if you ask for an extension it's possible that he'll give it to you. You do, however, have to show up to class to get the attendance points, but the notes are online. If you like really nice professors, Doc is for you.

First of all this is an interdisciplinary course. If you aren't capable of handling the interrelatedness of everything. This class is a bad idea. I truly loved this class and it inspired me to have the courage to make physics my minor (painting major) and do what I was destined to do. Instructor is interstellar, and wouldn't have it any other way.

How anyone could write a negative review about Dr. Ruiz is beyond me. He is truly one of the greatest professors I've had at UNCA, and I'm from a completely different major (meaning, I'm not a "science" person). He is very accessible, kind and interested in student learning. Plus! He provides the textbook - free of charge!

The best man on the face of the planet. He's made my entire college experience worthwhile; I would have already switched schools if not for him. I keep finding excuses to take his classes. This guy is so much fun, and he brings a lot of fun to the topics. I can imagine myself learning any topic with him. The amount of effort he puts into providing extra resources for learning and extra chances to get help from him is completely staggering. No other teacher I've had puts as much effort and time into helping their students as he does.
