her teaching philosophy is awesome- you get a grade based on your improvement in the class, not your grade overall. she is EXTREMELY helpful and caring. i am a much better writer thanks to downes. also, dr downes is a really cool person and has experienced a lot so get to know her!

When I first had Dr Downes, I liked her. She seemed pleasant and was quite helpful outside of class. After going through three classes with her, though, I got tired of her aimless and redundant class discussions and overabundant (pointlessly so) readings. She grades unfairly, seeming to have favorites, and will not bend at all in her unfair practic

The worst professor at unca. avoid her at all costs. she selects certain students to favor over others and then grades accordingly. very vague with what she expects then grades unfairly. also accuses people of plagiarism when thats clearly not the case. AVOID HER!

None of this is personal - Dr. Downes is a wonderful person and I would like very much to sit down for a cup of coffee with her. However, this did not make attending History of the English Language any easier, which I found akin to pulling teeth. My own. Too many readings, too little focus, too gushy-feely, not enough linguistics - aka science.
