This guy is Gru from Dispicable me. He is also not a very kind person. He has a take no crap attitude, which does make him a good prof. He obviously knows what he is doing but he could use some work with his social skills.

Do yourself a favor and never take a course taught by this person. Unless you're majoring in music education and are a huge butt-kisser, you will most likely hate your time spent in the building and most certainly your time spent in his classes.

Dr. Houlahan gives you what you give him. Try really hard, and he'll give you the world, but don't expect him to go out of his way to help you if you're not trying to help yourself. Many students complain about him but, honestly, everyone who has complaints about him I have complaints about as a student. Great man, great teacher, highly recommend.

Dr. Houlahan is a very tough professor, but he knows what he is doing more than anyone else that I have ever met. He is able to prepare you to go into public schools to teach any music class. He pushes students extremely hard and expects a lot from his students but take it seriously and you will improve more than you ever thought you would.

Over my years at Millersville, I learned a lot about music from Dr. H, but be warned. He treats students extremely poorly, is manipulative, plays favorites, and will persistently try to weed you out, even if you work hard to prove yourself. Save yourself the trouble, he's not worth it.

Dr. Houlahan is a great teacher, but definitely not an easy one. As a teacher who has studied under him in the Texas State Kodaly program, I find that though his classes are extremely challenging, you cannot possibly leave his classroom without being a better musician. He is a teacher worth studying with, but you must be dedicated to your work.

All hype, no substance. Very energetic but he really doesn't seem to know much about music if you really think about what he says.

Dr. Houlahan is an absolutely brilliant man. He takes your understanding of music and expands it exponentially. You MUST study hard and thoroughly, putting in the expected 6 hours a week. He's very intense at times but wants you to succeed so he will push you to your limits. People truly serious about music education will study with him.

Great teacher, if you're willing to learn. He seems very imposing, but if you accept that he knows much, much more than you, and you're willing to follow his instructions, you'll learn more than you could ever hope too. He's world renowned and he may seem arrogant at times, but he can teach you more about music than most anyone else in the world.

He knows what he is doing and wants to see you succeed. I have become such a better musician after my 5 semesters of Solfege. You know what the performance & written tests will consist of. Just practice and you will do great. He has a sense of humor and is friendly if you do your work!!

The sooner you give in and accept that Dr. Houlahan knows exactly what he's doing, the more you will learn. I had him for 5 semesters of theory(Kodaly-based) and I can't say enough about how much better of a musician I have become.

Horrible teacher. He is just an intimidating jerk. If you make a mistake or do one thing wrong, he will embarrass you in front of the entire class. He picked favorites from the beginning. If you are not one of his favorites, you are screwed because he won't change his views on you.

I took a Solfege/Kodaly summer course at Belmont University taught by Houlahan and Tacka. They are both brilliant. Houlahan can come across intimidating, but he does have a great sense of humor and really knows how to teach and how to teach future music teachers. Not an easy class, but definitely beneficial.
