I don't think there's any one more passionate about Shakespeare of teaching than Professor Gilbert. She is the single best thing about the UI's English Department. Take whatever you can from her!

She's fantastic and terrifying at the same time. she's hands down the toughest prof i've had, but she's also really helpful if you can find the guts to go to her office hours. if you're willing to work hard and can trust that she knows what she's doing you'll have a great experience.

Her big stunt used to be kicking students out of class around the third week for not reading assigned material. I an honors class with her my freshman year and was very homesick. She unnecessarily inspired fear. I can still do a great Miriam impression though... (as favorite speaks) "Uh-huh, uh-huh, okay, yeah, OKAY, that's an important point!"

Miriam is frightening and extremely demanding in the classroom, outside of the classroom she is a very sweet woman. She has a weird grading scale so you don't really know what you're grade is, and she isn't very approachable. She's brilliant, but still very scary.

She's a mean woman on a good day, but if you're a sucker for the early modern period she'll love you. She does grade with a bias from time to time, but she really didn't care for me and I still feel that my final grade was fair. Regardless, I do not recommend her unless you know exactly what you're getting yourself into.

DONT take her class. Unless you are really passionate about 17th century literature, or a drama student, this will be a setback. Class discussion is based upon constant ranting by her favorites, and grades are biased as well. No matter how hard you work, if she doesn't like you don't expect a good grade. It's not an issue of lazyness...she's mea

Comment:
The comments about Prof. Gilbert being domineering or rude are totally unfounded and insulting. If you think college-level courses should include missing class and turning in lazy papers then do not take her (try a local community college). Yet if you want an old school prof. who knows her subject and is willing to help then sign up.

Miriam is very tough, but fair. She has no tolerance for laziness, and I suspect that's why others here have called her "mean" or harsh. The fact is, if you put forth the effort, you will learn all kinds of great things, and you will find her to be very, very passionate about teaching. She's a real asset to the UI English dept.

If I wanted to take English for pleebs, I'd be in rhetoric. Poor discussion leader with no insights to offer, so awful I dropped her class despite a good reading list. Nickpicky, a tough grader with out actually demanding or rewarding hard work or good ideas- maybe the teacher for you, but Kopelston wins the English-off, for me.

Professor Gilbert is tough. And demanding. But she is an inspiring teacher. I've never worked harder for a B in my life, but I learned more about participating in college-level discourse than in any other course. Treats students as if they were adults. Demands you be accountable for your work and effort. I respect her a great deal.

By far the best professor at this school. She is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met, and she works hard to see her students acquire a similar intellect. Definitely one of the professors that will stay with me.

The ideal professor. Passionate about the subject, eager to foster learning and discussion in her courses. She cares about her students and how they do in her class, above and beyond what's required of her. Quite possibly the best professor at the University of Iowa.

Miriam was really fun in this class, which focused on the plays of Stoppard and Churchill. Discussions were interesting and helped clarify and bring to light different levels of the plays. I like her discussion style. She's always available to help.
