Comment:
Very good professor. As far as classic sociology goes, he knows his stuff and does a really good job with the class. The class is structured in a very unusual way, but I love it, and I think most people would. He's the best professor from whom to take Soc 475 in my opinion.

Terrible. He is like listening to static on the radio. Lectures were straight out of the book and were very boring and his dry, monotone voice made them worse.

Comment:
Professor Emirbayer lectured directly from the textbook. His lectures were extremely dry and boring, mainly because he did not seem at all interested in the class itself. Exams were based directly from small details in the textbook so read carefully. The book presented interesting material but unfortunately he did not in lecture.

I have a really mixed opinion of this course. On the one hand, I thought that the textbook was excellent and the material in general to be necessary knowledge on race in the US. On the other hand, Prof. Emirbayer (or as I took to calling him, Umirbayer) is a very boring lecturer, and I admit to starting an "um" count for him while bored in lecture.

I had very high hopes coming into this class, but Prof. Emirbayer made it almost a complete waste of time. His lectures were dry and erratic, and the text book was unreadable. I would not recommend this class to my worst enemy.

Material is interesting, but he is very boring. The class repeats the book almost exactly. they try to make you go to lecture, but u dont need to & they rlly cant notice if you don't show. Tests questions are very picky & are about specific details in book. Pay close attention to the reading & you should do fine. Overall boring, not too bad or hard

He was the most boring lecturer I have ever had. His lectures are exactly the same as his textbook so you don't have to go to class. The tests are very hard though. He has questions based on the smallest details. Information is interesting but there is a LOT of it.

Prof Emirbayer is definitely one of those guys who is an author first, professor second. Lecture is essentially mandatory, which sucks because he just restates the book which he co-authored. Read the text very carefully (best part of the course!), go to discussion, pay somewhat attention in lecture, and you should do well. 4 midterms, no final!

Very interesting class; it will change the way you think about race in America. Lectures were pretty boring, but he LOVES what he teaches. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Read it VERY carefully. If you are trying to get an A in the course you have to know the book. No final, no homework, no essays. 4- 50 multiple choice tests! :)

Be sure to read the textbook because even if he skips over the slides and says you're "not responsible" for that material, you are responsible for the text which basically reiterates what he says in lecture with more detail. He is horrible to listen to--terrible public speaker! a lot of ums and ahs-but the material is interesting. Overall, not bad.

Overall, I would say that the material covered in Soc 134 is very interesting and has definitely changed the way I view race. The textbook is actually the best part of the course, so I would recommend reading it. The tests are not hard if you actually read the textbook and take good notes. However, the lectures can be boring at times...

Mustafa is very hard to listen to at times. He is brilliant sociologist but he is not the greatest lecturer (uses many uhs and ums)The material isn't hard and can be interesting but attending lecture isn't necessary to pass with a good grade in this class. Slides are posted online and they go right along with the book.

Easy class. If you go to lecture and read the textbook before each exam, it's an easy A. His lectures can be rather dry but he's very passionate in what he teachers. If you have an open-mind going into the class you'll enjoy it, if not, you won't. Highly recommend!

This class is very boring. Mustafa makes white people feel inferior and says um and uhhh like alot. He states his opinion and is very biased during class. Read the book and youll be fine for the exams.

I heard horror stories about this professor and a lot of them are true. His lectures are SO boring and it irritated me so much when he wanted a discussion during lecture. I will admit that I did learn a lot in the class and ended up with a B so that wasn't too bad, but some of the exam questions are just ridiculous.
