Echenberg is simply wonderful. Extremely helpful if you ask, and most importantly, he is FAIR. As an African Studies major, I have taken all of his courses and to say the least, they have enriched my life. Not all profs are HOT, EXCITING etc..they are there to transmit knowledge...and that is exactly what Echenberg does. Truly, a great man!

Course load was spread out evenly during the term, which made things much easier. Prof is passionate, but can get boring and confusing at times. DO THE READINGS! 20% of your final and midterm depend on them...Echenberg isn't a particularly striking or thought-provoking prof: he's tolerable -- B/B-!

Class started out alright, but got brutal. Makes the exams pretty hard... especially the matching (based solely on the readings) I didnt think he was a very good prof and his lectures were laid out alright, but could have been given more clearly

A lot of the class is on the prof's own book on the experiences of Africans drafted by the French, the course focuses on the European colonizers, not the Africans themselves. You don't learn aboutlarger trends in African history, except for in health, but at the same time you don't learn many specific details about individual countries.

Excellent prof! I didn't like him that much in hist 200/201, but for this class he is so great! One of the only prof who realizes that university should be about learning, not just grades. He is so passioned, and motivated. Ans so knowledgeable! great!!!!!

I chose this class because of a recomendation, having heard he was great. Now though, I simply do not get the positive comments. Well read, yes--but the man puts you to sleep as he speaks. He could professionally read bedtime stories. He rambles and his lectures have no/little structure. I think, interesting but where's the connection to the topic?

Whiny, unentertaining and obsessed with trying to prove that primitive cultures are actually more advanced than the advanced cultures. Seems nervous, ill-at-ease and unsure of himself. African history is unknown because of a dearth of written records, so it focuses on modern stuff. Timewastage.

My favourite prof! So nice, and cute in an old guy type of way. SO many notes, but on my last midterm with him, I solely read the course pack and got an A. Even if you truly don't care about Africa, try to sound really into it when you talk or make presentations. He eats it up. (381 = no final!)

A real nice guy who loves the topic, especially health in Africa. Read the coursepack and listen to all the lectures, because he never tests the textbook.

Taking notes will drive you crazy because he packs so much information in that it's really tough to keep up. But it is interesting and you will learn a lot and feel smart. Hist 200 is better than HIST 201.

Great prof, very interesting and knowledgable. I have to say, I really don't see the importance of health and healing, something he talks about sooo much, but the rest of the class was fascinating. It was well run, helpful, the reading was interesting.
