Made us write papers on a variety of topics but once we met him in the mandatory office hours he would mark off what we did wrong. You could change everything he told you was wrong and would still mark you off for more stuff he never told you about. He will stand in class and stare you down waiting for a rely for one of his confusing questions also

Heres a tip, always agree and dont ever think about disagreeing. Keep your thoughts to yourself and adjust everything like he wants it. The grade is a huge gray matter along with what he wants. Hell straight out tell you that youre wrong in a speech, just by his opinion. Berkey is not afraid to tell you what he thinks either. Very rude..

Right off the back of the Semester, I realized this was a guy you do NOT bring politics into a discussion. Very opinionated, no matter what you say he's always right and you're wrong. Puts people down constantly and does not improve students in speaking yet creates a fear. Will criticize everything you say. Also, doesn't go over material for tests.

I didn't learn anything from this class. If you don't know what he was thinking at that second than you weren't going to get a good grade. For extra credit you get to fix one of your papers for a better grade. I did this and he marked me off on new things that he didn't mark off the first time. Will never take his classes again.

Very tough grader. Gives very harsh feedback that is not very helpful. I heard awful things about him and now I understand why. Avoid him at all costs!

If you already write essays like a emotionless robot, this is the professor for you. If you write with your own unique style and individualism on your essays, this professor is not for you. Instead of aiding in the improvement of the quality of your individual writing style, he scolds any sort of soul from writing. Welcome to conformity...

Mr. Berkey is the worst English teacher I have ever had. He is a hard grader, which is not a bad thing, however he doesn't know what he wants so you have no clue what he wants. Unless you write it exactly how he wants you are guaranteed a bad grade and that's after he proofreads it. Unless you have his brain with his thoughts than good luck.

I was getting a 76 percent in the class so I took as much time and effort into writing one of my last papers. I sent my rough draft to a strict English teacher I had in high school. I asked her to revise it for me, once I corrected everything she commented on I emailed it to him. He gave me a 21/40! He is very picky and dissects your thoughts.

Excellent. We wrote four or five papers during the semester. He'd go over each one thoroughly, have us do a rough draft, and then would meet with each student individually to go over the rough draft. He'd make suggestions, you change them, you pass. If you have poor grammar and blame him for marking off for that, it's your problem. Easy, helpful.

I thought he was very clear with everything that he wanted, class mainly consists of speechestestsdebates (DEBATES ARE VERY FUN) I got an A and the class really helped me develop my speaking style and it made me a better speaker which helped me in other classes at SVCC and it has helped me at the school that I transferred to.

He's regimented and tough but it's for a purpose. When you're competing with students that attend more prestigious institutions you'll be prepared and that's what it's all about. If you try and seek help you'll do fine. He's got standards and the idea is to assist students, when you know it's for your own good you should accept him readily.

Berkey like things to be exactly his way. If there were short answer questions on a test, you could answer them correctly and still get points off because it wasn't worded how he wanted it to be.

Mr. Berkey is great. He's tough and expects a lot but if you follow the instructions, put in effort, and have a basic grounding in writing skills then you will do fine. Also, if he sees potential skill he'll be harder on you so you'll have to work harder.

Mr. Berkey is great. He expects you to care about the class. I imagine the reason he can seem pretentious at times is because most of the students in the classroom simply don't care. Pay attention in class, and try your best, and you will get along great with him. He is one of my favorite teachers at Sauk, which is a rather unpopular opinion.

I took this class online, and I was very confused as to why he was such a tough grader. He's very opinionated and is a very, it's my way or no way kinda guy. He seemed like a nice guy, he just wanted everything the way he wanted it, and I ended up having to drop the course. I wouldn't take another class with him again.

Tough grader, though that's expected in a college course. Essays have to be to his standards, and he tends to be arrogant about it. There was a sentence that was grammatically correct in one of the quizzes, but he marked it wrong. Even after explaining in full detail, he doesn't take it into consideration and believes he is right all the time. I would not recommend this professor.
