Welch sensei is cool. She knows what she's talking about and she really wants you to do well. Class is very fast paced. Go! To! Her! Office! Hours! Once you start falling behind, you're screwed. You will be called on randomly so try not to be nervous about your pronunciation or handwriting. She'll most likely give you points for effort.

Professor Welch is one of the nicest professors I've had at Hofstra! She calls on people randomly, so be prepared to speak at least once every class, but she'll stop and explain something whenever someone makes a mistake so everyone gets a lot of review. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. She wants to get to know you, and she'll help you more one on one.

You can either ignore the insane amount of work for her class and fail it, or do all of the work for her class and struggle in all of your other classes. There are 5 2 page papers, a 10 page research paper, a 15-20 minute group project speech and powerpoint, pop quizzes, and readings and movies. Do not take her if you want to keep your GPA up.

Welch is very nice. Class isn't very structured, and I would have preferred to have more clear lesson plans, but if you keep track, you can follow along in the textbook, workbook, and language lab and learn a lot. I was intimidated because I'm terrible at language, but I was comfortable and really learned, which is what I think matters.

She's nice, and very knowledgeable, but she's very disorganized, goes a bit slow, and her explanations can be very long-winded and unclear. She's not a terrible teacher, but she needs a lot of work.

She's nice but an awful professor. She gives a lot of reading which would be fine if she didn't ask unclear questions, and then give quizzes when no one could answer her unclear questions. Also really boring. Avoid.

I LOVE professor Welch, she is the kindest professor who only wants to see her students learn and enjoy Japanese. Class work wasn't too hard and you need to remember to do the lab work. My class was small and we became pretty close over the year. I definitely would take another class with professor Welch.

She's alright. Her class most certainly isn't an easy A I actually had to do some work. There was a blog I had to do once a week, three 4-5 page papers (you can write a forth and she'll take the best 2/3, the 1st paper on Genji you can't redo), a group presentation, a final exam, and readings. Class is kind of boring, but she does take attendence so you have to go. If you need a cross cultural credit, there's better classes out there than this one and there are worse.

This class made me dislike Jap Lit. Every other word was "Ummm". I mean she's knowledgable but extremely boring and confused with her lectures. She does not prepare for them and is a tough grader. I wrotegood essays and got B-s and one C! She expects you to finish the books in a weeks matter and makes you write blogs every week, waste of time!

A nice woman, but overall disorganized. She has too many reading assignments online; it's impossible to keep up with all of the reading work with other classes. She also revised her syllabus halfway through the semester, which resulted in a disorganized mess. She knows her stuff, but avoid her unless she gets her organizational skills together.

If your into Japanese Literature and its your minor , then by all means take her. But if you just need this class for a liberal arts requirement, then AVOID at all costs! Her teaching is horrible and her paper topics are too hard. Be prepared to read $ books , she requires 2 500 word blogs every week. Avoid jap li at all cost. I go a b+

I've taken just about every class you can with Professor Welch and continue to do so because I love her! I'm an Asian Studies major and think she's one of the nicest and most knowledgeable people. She obviously loves what she teaches and picks great material for the class. She's also a very fair grader. Great professor!

Professor Welch is a great teacher and I'm surprised to see these low ratings. She is crystal clear when it comes to teaching the material and grading work. Helpful inside and out of the classroom and has a great personality. The material may be hard, but she does her best to explain it through meaningful class discussions.

She was a great professor, it was the class that was lacking. She tried to get everyone to participate but it was like pulling nails. Yes she does give a lot of work however the books are really small and most of the materials she tries to prepare ahead for you. We had to compare a lot of movies and books but they were all interesting topics.

Professor Welch was a great teacher for Japanese. Like someone else said, she is a little scatterbrained but that's just what makes the class fun and bearable.

I am sick and tired of people complaining about college being hard! College should be hard! She is a reasonable professor who has a true passion for what she teaches. Anyone who has the slightest information in any type of culture should experience a class with her. Yes she is obsessed with Japanese culture but she should be. She knows her stuff!

This woman was the bain of my existence for spring semester. Do not take her unless your life revolves around Japanese culture, as her's does. Absolutely insane midterm, two essays plus defining 20 terms in an hour is just completely unreasonable. Probably a great teacher if you're into Japanese culture. She'd be better teaching high school.

Complete agreement with the last 2 posts regarding HUHC...Professor Welch is a nice lady, but she does not belong teaching an HUHC course because she is too focused on Japanese literature, isn't the best speaker to be listening to, and quite simply doesn't really know what she can and cannot expect from students (a la the completely unfair midterm)
