Comment:

Very tough by extremely knowledgeable. She demanded a level of excellence that helped me in later years. Her knowledge is extensive. It helped to speak with her after class or during office hours. I came away with a better understanding in both of the history courses I took from her.

Fifteen years ago, Dr. Roy's high standards prepared me to excel in upper level courses. A couple of well-deserved low marks made me try harder and work smarter. To the whiners: get over your arrogance, start listening, and begin real learning.

If you are attempting to maintain a high GPA, do not, I repeat, DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER. Ridiculous assignments (write 1200 words comparing these two textbooks); the worst class for the morning (voice like a crow); harsh marker - save yourself, don't take her ever.

Very nice, helpful, knowledgable, dull and tough. Explained her marking scheme to me once: A-, as good as she could have done as an student, A, better than she could have done, A+, better than she could do now. 1/3 of the class failed the 1st exam.

From taking both Hist 344 and 355 this year with Dr. Roy, I found her to be tough but fair. She REALLY knows her stuff. Very helpful, but go to her office hours prepared. I didn't do as badly as I thought I would in her classes:)

Dr.Roy is a very challenging professor--you will learn a lot if you do the work. She does mark hard but teaches you how to write. She is very helpful outside of classtime. If you want a good mark, here is the answer: OLD ZAP EXAMS! ;)

Tough. But, she is smart and you can learn from her. If you want to work your ass off for a B (maybe) and you can afford the time, you will learn. She is the toughest marker, and really could lighten up a lot and still be fair.

She really is the hardest marker in the school! She is also a legend in CanHist who refers to John T. Saywell as Jack... If you pass, get a reference letter! Probably my worst mark ever, don't do it!

Worst Prof I have ever had! She prides herself for being the hardest marker of UVic. WAY too much reading and little worthless assignments. Taking ONE course with her is equal to taking THREE courses with someone else. She is ridiculous!

It's like sitting in front of your grandma and having her reminisce about the good old times. There tend to be lots of assignments that are worth only 5% each but require 600 pages of reading and 1500 words of writing.
