Seems old and mean but really does care about those who put an effort in. Gives lecture notes you can add to and gives midterm questions upfront to prep for. Tests are mostly lecture and readings are for discussionpaper. Participate, be prepared for discussion and go to every class and he will like you. Doesn't use learn. LOVES his pugs... A LOT.

Comment:

Professor Harrigan only remembers students who interest him. Despite how long he has been in the profession, he has a positive outlook on students and how hard most of us work. If you are looking for a bird course, DO NOT any of Harrigan's courses. He expects hard work. Pay attention in lecture, take really quick notes. Read all assigned work.

I took European History with him in the early 90s. One of the most intense academic experiences ever. Comes across as cold, but cares deeply about his students. He wrote one of my recommendations for my MBA. It was very thoughtful, detailed, and you'd be surprised by the degree to which he actually remembers every pen stroke you made. Great.

Knows his stuff very well but there is a slight lack in organized thought with him. Can be very egotistical and full of himself but he's been teaching forever so its understandable. Really does care about students who make an effort, actual genuine effort. Loves his dogs alot!! haha

I LOVE this prof. He's the best History professor I've had at UW(and I'm a history major, so that says something). He's a tough but fair marker-- go to class, do the readings and you'll do fine. Yes, there are a lot of essays, but it's UNIVERSITY HISTORY... that's what we do. Deal with it. If you're willing to work, I highly recommend his courses.

A lot of essays, but this is university - get used to it. I agree that he is not a warm, smiley professor, but that's simply not his job. If you require coddling, don't sign up for his courses. Otherwise, THINK before talking, and speak respectfully when you do. If you do so, you'll do well.

This prof is horrible...unapproachable...unfair in his marking, plays favorites. Class was dry, his approach to teaching is very aggressive and arrogant. The mid-term and exam are essay questions, have a general understanding and you will do just fine!
