Comment:
His online Beats Poetry class lacks constructive criticism and he'll criticize word choice instead of the paper as a whole. He will teach you to teach him what he already knows, so there's no room for creativity; rubrics do not specify any guidance either. Enjoyable subjects, just not an enjoyable professor to learn them from. Take another class.

Comment:
Prof. Murphy is an absolutely arbitrary grader. Assignments lack instruction, and feedback is minimal and not useful for future assignments. I took this class (beats and mid-century) expecting discussions regarding this movement in writing. Instead, it is purely solo work that you are given NO direction on. Extremely poor teacher, do not recommend.

Comment:
Professor Murphy gives almost zero instruction for assignments. The only instruction he gives are references to compare poems to movies or books which are not even part of the coursework. He grades incredibly tough with some pretty harsh criticism on your work. I should have ran when I saw that I had to buy four books for this one class. Run!

Took 2 ONLINE LIT classes (3313 and 3931) with Prof. Murphy Spring 2017. Read the books, do research, write essays. Buy the MLA handbook that's relevant at the time. Don't hesitate to send him emails. He answers them with regularity. He wants critical thinking, not just regurgitation. Found compare/contrast essays got me great grades.

Expect to be graded based on how much you agree with his way of thinking. He will completely tear apart your essays. I would not mind criticism if it was constructive. Do yourself a favor and find another Professor.

There wasn't a lot of work in this class. Read from the book, one discussion per week, 4 papers that were 500 words each, and a final essay and a final exam. However the professor is a pretty hard grader so you better make sure you work hard on each assignment. Not impossible but wouldn't recommend if you are looking for an easy A.

He barely gives instructions and when he does, they are extremely unclear. He absolutely destroys any work you turn in if it doesn't live up to his extremely high expectations that you have no idea about BECAUSE HE DOESN'T EXPLAIN. Also like someone else said, if you don't have the same ideas as him, he will destroy your work.

Easy short discussion posts due before every class to talk about each poet for the course. No tests, four short papers, a long research paper, and a final paper. Fair grader, helps to come to class but can make it without being there all the time. Pretty funny, notes on board can get confusing (not organized) so laptop helped me to jump backforth

Although it isn't his fault, I would NOT recommend taking this class if it has hundreds of students enrolled. The lack of discussion in the class made the lectures unbearably dull. I read every book and went to every class and I still did poorly, in part because the reading material was thoroughly uninteresting. Impossible to get an appointment too

Dr. Murphy is definitely a professional. He is undoubtedly an expert in his field and in the genre of literature my class entailed (Science Fiction). Definitely an interesting course, but be warned: you will read until it hurts. Five novels and 8-10 short stories in a semester. I find getting the audiobooks and following along a good strategy.

I found him funny and interesting, attendance wasn't mandatory and missing class won't kill you. The texts were not old school lit but still interesting. Overall the class was no harder than any other course I've taken. Grading for the essays is undefined so talk with him about your essay topics. Do the reading and the discussions and you'll fine.

Smart guy, way too picky as to what he wants you to write; seems as if he expects you to be able to operate on the level of experience that he has. Will down right insult your work just because he doesn't like it. Too narrow-minded in terms of choices for readings.

Professor Murphy is quirky and funny, his lectures were interesting and well-organized. Each assignment was well-defined, although there were a lot of instances in which students struggled to meet the criteria. Prof. M Spurred great discussions about the novels, although some of the selection in Science Fiction I felt were a bit lacking in quality.

He is really weird but I enjoyed his class. If you like really wacky people and think that they are funny you will find this class really entertaining. Honestly, I probably didn't attend half the classes and still made an A. Since it was half online basically all you have to do is submit whatever is due just like a fully online class.

A little disorganized with his notes in class but it isn't anything that you can't get accustomed to within the first couple of weeks. Very clear as to what he expects from you. If you follow the syllabus while you're doing your work and go to class regularly, then you will be fine. Just pay attention and take good notes.

Extremely heavy reading load, there are daily reading with writing assignments twice weekly. There are 8 papers and a written final. He really knows the material and references it to everything. He is hard to understand at times, but helpful.

I took modern Asian lit with him, and while it's clear that he knows his stuff, getting any useful information out of him was practically hopeless. He' off on some tangent more often that naught, which makes for a generally entertaining class - it also makes for a class where you learn very little about what you actually signed up for.
