Comment:

Actually, Penny speaks fluent Norwegian & some Danish (also reads Latin). I studied Simone Weil, Hannah Arendt & feminist philosophy with her from 1992-1995; her tuition was transformative. She is an outstanding thinker & teacher, a true intellectual, & MHC is lucky to have her (which is why she has repeatedly won teaching awards over the decades).

Very knowledgeable and accomplished, but like what a lot of people have said here, she is pompous and rude both as a professor and dean of college. Ladies, don't be discouraged, there are lots of accomplished professors here who are very humble. Try Alan Durfee of the Math department

I was in Penny's first Government class back in 1972. I was fulfilling my Social Science req. at Amherst in Poly Sci, and hated it. The Comparative Gov. course that she taught was excellent, and there are still things that I use and remember in my current profession, such as when I am in Norway doing O&G business, that I am still grateful for.

Penny is an amazing professor as well as an amazing person. She is extremely intelligent, clear and concise, and genuinely cares about what her students have to say. Working with her was an absolute pleasure; I would do so again in a heartbeat. HIGHLY recommended by me.

I highly recommend taking this course with Penny. You'll come out with a lot more knowledge about the world, and it will really help you grow personally. Penny is a wonderful professor. She truly listens to what her students have to say during class discussion, and she encourages everyone to speak. She definitely helped me become more confident about speaking in class, and my ideas in general. I would definitely recommend Penny and her comparative politics course!

I came to MHC with no self-confidence. Penny, starting with this class, became my mentor and encouraged me to pursue dreams that everyone else thought were crazy. Her class is challenging but worth it, and the reason i became a politics major. I left MHC as a confident woman, and this largely started by her taking me seriously. she's a real gem.

She is just a cutie patootie! She can be kind of mean if you say something she doesn't agree with, but welcomes ideas and opinions anyway. Lots and lots of reading, and quite a bit of writing as well. She's a fair grader, and allows for rewrites.
