If you dont' have an literary mind, this is not your class. It's not a read and repeat type. He asks you to expalin your thinking. If you want structured english classes go back to high school.

He will not like you unless you are able to stroke his ego every class period. If you have a differing point of view than him, he will not consider your opinion valid. Class was never structured, he obviously went off the cuff every day. Unfortunately he isn't very witty or organized, so we never actually talked about anything substantial. Bad.

Without a doubt, a tough grader, but that's what you go to college for. He expects students to actually read the text, and support their ideas from the texts. The "clarity" of his expectations are clear, just not easy to meet. If you like literature and will actually read the assigned reading, I really recommend his classes.

Carafiol has harsh qualities, but I liked some things about the class. If he honestly thinks your comment is stupid, he'll tell you. People begin only raising their hands if it's something really worthwhile. He challenges you. On the downside, he isn't always willing to entertain alternative idea's. Good if you take him as objectively as possible.

I'm just about to graduate, and I can flat out tell you without a moment of hesitation that this guy was the worst of all my professors in memory. He didn't provide a syllabus, ran a very boring class, swore AT the students once, graded harshly, and provided little expectation as to what he expected and then was upset when they were not met. BAD.

i was surprised to read negative comments. he is one of the most brilliant profs i've ever had. i now have an MA from PSU and i asked carafiol to be on my masters exam committee. i had to go before him for my oral which was challenging and fun. i have taught lit myself for the past 15 years & as a teacher and student, i applaud his passion!

Hostile to students, makes derrogatory comments, seems to have some vauge notion of the class topic(pragmatism) as nothing more than semantics and subtle one-up-man-ship. unable to tolerate opinions at varience with his AND uses his own book as text-yuck.

Comment:
Am Poetry, Carafiol is a strict New Critic. No weakly tied theories of interpretation posited, and none allowed. My class understands that his sharp comments only reflect this, and he allows others to talk and to interrupt him. Very effective class discussions.

Comment:
Carafiol is not only uncaring and unhelpful, he is uninteresting and made me hate the subject at hand. His favorite letter is "C", and will give you that grade no matter how hard you try. He makes fun of people in class, blabs on and on, and always does a great job at making a student feel terrible. He is the worst teacher I have ever had at PSU.

Although I didn't do well in his class, I came to understand and appreciate poetry like I never thought possible. He is not very approachable inside or outside of class, but a whiz when it comes to poetry.

I cannot agree more with the other ENG306 poster. Obtuse questions, repetitive begging for clarification on writing assignments, and a complete inverse of the stated "don't give me what you think I want" policy (but you'd better give me what I want)--earned me my lowest grade (B-) at PSU. PC's lectures were brilliantly done. No beef here. But his abject berating of students, and his solipsistic love of fellow deconstructionists left me empty. There are other theoretical options, Peter.

While very charismatic and a great speaker, Mr. Carafiol's intentions in this class were difficult to "get." Probably, this has to do with the fact that for the entirety of our grade, we were to write only three papers, choosing from obtuse ques
