One of the best professors I've ever had. Don't take if you can't go to the classes because you won't learn anything otherwise. Intelligent and cares about his students - not out to get you like some other profs.

The exams are sometimes a little harder than they need to be, given the time constraints. There's also a TON of reading that you can't fall behind in, or else you'll fall behind. However, Prof. Gibian is a really jolly dude. His passion is infectious and lectures are fun to listen to. If you genuinely like English and learning, then take him.

Comment:
I was a huge fan of Professor Gibian's lecture style. His lectures were engrossing and he encouraged plenty of discussion. Nevertheless, I did not receive any feedback throughout the semester at all. There was no real opportunity to gauge his stylistic preferences. I received a final letter grade that was lower than I normally strive for. unfair.

Comment:
Professor Gibian kind of dodders. Many profs have idiosyncrasies and he says ... or whatever a lot. He is really into Emerson, the transparent eyeball and stuff. Latter half of readings are more interesting, the first half is a bit of a dread. If you're American and very patriotic, go for it.

Prof Gibian is incredibly passionate about the material and his lectures are quite effective at presenting the main/important aspects of each of the readings. The readings are a pleasure to read which makes the reading load easily manageable. Grade depends on TAs and while not an easy A, this course should be on the radar of all Arts students.

He is an amazing prof! Clearly so passionate about what he is speaking about, although tended to ramble on about the same concepts/ideas. Doing well highly depends on the TA you have. Heavy reading though, but very interesting if you enjoy pre-civil way American literature!

Gibian is a great professor, is an interesting lecturer, and engages even a huge lecture hall as if he is talking to a friend. He is funny, and although he rambles over what has been discussed sometimes, it is certainly bearable because he's very excited and interested. He brings up relevant topics, and is a helpful and great prof.

American Literature- Such an amazing professor. Really passionate about his subject, and his lectures are very interesting to listen to, and you'll learn a lot. Material is sometimes challenging, but he is amazing at making you understand. Learned a lot. Midterm and final are easy as long as you understand the central ideas of each book. Good TAs.

Gibian is extremely sweet and endearing. Amazingly passionate about this subject and the texts we read. He covers a huge amount in each lecture, never running out of things to say. Midterm isn't hard, the final is a 3 hour exam so it's tougher. A great professor!

Gibian is very passionate in American Lit, and it's evident. He provides very interesting insights to the reading material and I appreciate the stories that was read in class. I can say that the conferences were a lot more enjoyable than lecture but it depends on who your TA is. ( Dave Boylen - is awesome)

Gibian Rocks! He's really into American Lit. Assignments are appropriate for a 1st year class. People who complain about the midterm need to suck it up. It's not 5 essays, it's 5 identification questions and anyone in university should be able to handle that.
