I wasn't sure if I was in class or listening to some bizarre soliloquy in the worst one-man show of all time. Not a nice thing to say, but when you announce to the class that the only reason you have tenure is because you've written books and that teaching "doesn't matter", then what do you expect?

Was helpful when asked! Given the grading scheme there is no reason to attend lecture. Everything for the quizzes is in the book and you have to read it even if you take notes. Should be more clear as to what he wants in the presentation, and quiz questions were vague, but it's still an easy course so long as you try.

This is, BY FAR, the worst professor I have ever had. There really are no words to describe how bad he is. NO ONE should take a class with him, ESPECIALLY a grad student.

Professor Schotch shows no sympathy for students. He does not provide outlines to any of the work required for the class. He drones on in monotone for while SITTING at the front of the class. He is obviously one of the awful professors who make it to tenure and then simply stop caring. A truly rotten experience. Proceed with caution.

I've taken a few courses with professor Schotch now. I can understand the negative sentiment. I do not have it however; I have learned a lot from the material, and am satisfied with the lack of care for a grading system. He is a cool guy; I just think that other people need to be able to stomach hard liquor.

Far and above the worst prof I've ever had, in any subject. I have since gone on to study logic full time, but I had to change schools to do it.

Intermediate Logic. There was no proper evaluation in this class. No exam, no tests, no assignments, no papers. I met with him once (half-way through term), and he asked me to do a proof on the board. I guess he gave me a C because I stalled at one point? Strangely I got "A"s in all my other Philosophy classes at Dalhousie.

Rude, sarcastic and puts a lot of students down. People ask about paper requirements, he refers to the WebCT syllabus he made which is vague. Though understanding at times, he's dry and lifeless during class... can be a huge drama queen too. Existentialism class..you don't need to go. Everything's online. Amazing content... horrible teacher.

Wow, what a character. Perfect for teaching existentialism class ;P. From what I have seen it seems clear that he doesn't give a damn about anybody's opinion unless they have a Ph D. Very knowledgable, I strangely took a liking to him. Can sometimes be a drama queen in lectures, but really helped me grasp a lot of concepts. Easy marker too

Attended this class only a handful of times, came out with an A+, and the notion that Quine was an idiot. Terrible choice of concepts and structure for new philosophy students. Was pleasant in conversation about topics. Had him for Logic also. Teaches in a way that is dumbed down in all the wrong places, making classes tedious and incomprehensible.

Professor Schotch is a great teacher. I owe him much for what he has taught me about life, and this sort of knowledge that he shares seems to be scarce in the academic world. Thus, the man and his work should be cherished.

I was highly disappointed with this course. I found Dr. Schotch to be a bitter man. I dropped this course... because he made me feel stupid when I asked for help, he told me simply to refer to the Web CT page, and refused to give me a clear answer in response to my question regarding our paper. I was very unhappy with Dr. Schotch

He is does not respond to questions well. However, I learned a lot in this class and found his humour to be entertaining. Would be a great class is only he would resist the temptation to shoot down students' questions that he finds idiotic... snappy dresser

Poor quality professor with grating, sardonic sense of humor. Horrible marking scheme (two exams, 50% each). His response to my request for help in figuring out some practice exercises was to do more exercises. Made no effort to answer questions or to explain anything. Said we could say anything on his university evaluation because he has tenure!

HE ruined your GPA? Maybe if you had attended class and done the exercises, or gone to him for assistance either in person or on the web, you might have gotten a decent grade. Schotch is a great prof--- but you have to be willing to do the work.

He ruined my GPA, with his "pull the mark out of the air" approach. I notice he doesn't appear to be teaching this semester. I hope the arrogant PR...got fired. No PAYING student should have to be on the receiving end of his sarcasm and disdain for humanity. Dal should do a better job of screening its "help".

If you enjoy heavy breathing into a mic, Scotch is a hit! I hear he is actually a smart guy, but his classes are way over-simplified. This leads me to beleive that he thinks his students are all idiots. Didnt learn much from him, but it was an easy class
