boring, but he actually gave a crap about his students; other profs could learn from him: students, not robots, are sitting in front of them

Comment:
Seary's lack of focus is insulting. The material is dry enough without his digressions. He knows he digresses constantly but doesn't stop so he obviously doesn't care. The worst part is after teaching you nothing and killing whatever interest you might have in the material, he isn't the most generous marker. He's a nice guy, but a bad professor.

Comment:
If he fooled around less and lectured more, I'd be happier. He repeats himself and focuses too much on the performance aspect. Always off on irrelevant tangents, he's far too preoccupied with his students' lives. At times he can be very rude and he doesn't respect his class. He treats us like children, unworthy of an appropriate formal lecture.

Prof. Seary is a lot of fun. His acknowledged digressions contain pearls of wisdom that will eventually prove to be some of the most important things one can learn in life (though, of course, you won't realize this til later). Made Shakespeare enjoyable. Too bad he's retiring soon.

A sweet old fellow with a nice sense of humour and an obvious fondness for his students. Although I disagreed with many of his interpretations of the plays, interesting insights abounded.

such a cute old man. he said the course would start to come together in february and he was right! If some of these people actaully came to class they would have seen uderneath all the off-topic stories (i.e. a class about 18th C hats) he is a wealth of knowledge. go to class people!!

Cramming for the exam & I realize that half this stuff isn't as bad as I was complaining about all year. I suspect most of the happy-faces here are from people who did the readings. Me, I'm doing penance for never reading and being sullen in class. In retrospect, then, a good course & a good prof.

First, take your syllabus. Tear it to small pieces. Then, sit through a month off topic. Then enjoy the rest of the class immensely, if you are still showing up.

Prof. Seary gave me a "mean" mark (as he described it) but it was well deserved considering that I am a science student at heart "stuck" in the English Program. I liked his anecdotes. Appreciated his dedication. At times I did zone out and whenever I skipped class I was watching General Hospital.

Though the material studied in ENG306 can be dry at times, the history behind it is always interesting. I like Prof. Seary's method of explaining the context as well as the work itself. He is also enthusiastic, which makes all the difference. Also, I got a good mark, so he isn't THAT "ungenerous" :P

Comment:
Seary is boring, tedious, pedantic, and completely lacking in focus. He's not exactly a generous marker either. The least he could do is hold the students to as low a standard as he obviously holds himself. If you teach nothing, you should expect nothing. The worst prof in the dept. Waste of time!

Comment:
If there were an infinite amount of time available I'm sure Prof Seary would be much better at his job. However, since he is unable to keep himself from wandering away from the subject, everything except the first item studied is rushed. Prof Seary taught me next to nothing in this course.

Comment:
I had Seary for Shakespeare a few years back and he was terrible. He took 3 months on Hamlet and literally did 5 plays in 3 weeks thereafter. He made remarks about Ophelia's **** in a movie version of Hamlet. He rambles a lot. I was an English specialist- trust me, avoid this man.

I feel sorry for the students who think Seary is a good prof. Obviously, they have never been exposed to the number of superior instructors this institution has to offer.

If Prof Seary is not the worst professsor I have ever had, he is certainly the most frustrating. I have learned nothing in his course, as he prefers to discuss his own random observational tangents than the actual significance of the text at hand. All knowledge to be gained here is self-taught.

Thus far, appreciating his vast knowledge on Dryden. Appreciate that he reads the poems that are assigned and in the meantime stops to interpret the phrases or explain its historical background. He is well spoken, and has a lot to say which is pleasing because ackward pauses are avoided.

I find Prof. Seary to be an engaging and interesting speaker. Sure, he may seem to go off topic, but usually on a related tangent to those who care to look. I'm not a big fan of Shakespeare, but Seary makes it entertaining at least.

Comment:
Buried in his random musings are extremely important pieces of information. Unfortunately, it's next to impossible to tell which are which. He thinks he is much more open to discussion than he actually is, as well - he doesn't leave room for students to discuss, and then complains when they don't.
