Phil Dean is a very, very nice man and he has single-handedly reawakened the chemist in me. His kindness, compassion, and interest in the subject make those early morning classes bearable.

I think a lot of people who posted below are attributing too much of their sleepiness in Dr. Dean's classes to the prof himself and not enough to the fact that the class was at 9:30 AM! Still, lectures could have been slightly more interesting (maybe do some demonstrations involving explosions). Dr. Dean is also a genuinely nice person.

Oh God boring... I expected much more from a prof than this. I haven't had a class yet in which I haven't fallen asleep. Using overhead typed notes is NOT a good way of keeping students interested and focused. Chem has the potential to be fun, but it's presented in such a dry way that the course has become something to dread (or bring a pillow to!)

Geez, this man loves to go off onto random tangents. Not only is this a waste of time, it makes no point of even waking up to attend his class. He was never open to questions and did few examples in class. His lectures were so terrible, I had to start attending another prof's lectures.

He's a nice guy, but his lectures suck...he just reads off his notes on the overhead without much more explanation. his notes aren't very clear at that, and he doesn't really stimulate interest in what he's teaching. he is friendly though...just can't really teach

I challenge you to find a more boring prof. His classes were unbearable, but he is a really nice man. Just do tutorials & old exmas, no reason at all to put yourself through the torture that is his class. He can't teach: He just reads his notes, which you can view online. Very smart guy though.

Definately a SOLID teacher. Knows his stuff, knows how to explain it well. Class is a bit dry, but he follows a good theory+examples pattern. Love the accent and cute remarks. I think If you can stay awake, you'll find chem is a breeze thanks to him.
