UVic has an awful lot of mediocre, disinterested students who want an easy 4-year ride thru to their degree. But then a really very good, thorough, interesting, and above all, challenging prof like Dr. Desai comes along and screws it all up for them. Desai is one of the few truly great profs I've had at this otherwise humdrum dump of a school.

She disappeared to a conference in India and was gone for the last week of classes until after our final exam...needless to say, she is not very helpful in office hours. Watch out, unless you are a Marxist and have a high tolerance for boring lectures, I don't suggest taking this class!

Desai manages to take an interesting topic and make it painfully boring. She does not make even the smallest effort to hide her left-wing views and is a brutally hard marker. She also deducts marks for missed lectures.
