Comment:
She does not spoon feed her classes and makes you think and consider. She does not just regurgitate what is in the book and cases but expects students to think of the case in context of society, history, and the other cases in that area. She is an interesting professor and a nice person who cares about her students.

Her tests are entirely based on the Criminal Code not what she covers in lecture. Now trying to do criminal law based classes in upper year I am way behind other students as she chose not to teach substantive criminal law. Nothing you can do if placed into her class by the school though.

To all the incoming firsties who have been slotted into Johnson's Crim class: I am sorry. You cannot switch; you are stuck. To make the most out of your time in her class, skip everything in the textbook except the actual cases themselves. Read Martin's Criminal Code religiously in order to actually learn substantial law.

Comment:
Prof. Johnson taught me both constitutional law and feminist advocacy at the University of New Brunswick. While I was not interested in her critical approaches to the law, she always struck me as being fair, particularly for someone of that bent. She was one of the better lecturers at UNB, and is someone whom I recall with fondness and admiration

Would probably make a good second-year prof for people interested in hearing only her biased approach to criminal law, but for new people to Law School, just terrible.

Comment:
This was my worst teacher at UVic. She is very smart but is absolutely terrible as a prof. The worst thing - she teaches a mandatory course that students have no say in selecting a prof for. I thought I'd be studying Canadian criminal law and procedure, not "the feminist approach to Canadian criminal law and procedure". AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Kept safe from student feedback by her Tenure, Rebecca uses the class as a soapbox for whatever her cause of the day may be. Critical theory has its place, but not in a substantive first year class. Hearing someone trying to champion the causes of the downtrodden is hard to swallow with stories of how her phillipeana nanny's accent is 'so cute'.

Not a prof you should EVER take a foundational law class from (i.e. Crim). She's a good lecturer, and within her own specialty she could be quite good. But she's far too disorganized and all over the place to be good for a first year class.

This is a hard class to take in first year as most students are not prepared or not ready to do the work required and instead lash out at the professors. Now that I have graduated, I see how usefull the class was and how it has prepared me for my upper year classes. I thank Rebecca now for pushing us to do some critical thinking back then.

Comment:
Unlike most students who are use to being spoon feed facts, Rebecca makes her class synthesize and actually think undependably. Being a first year class, many students are neither prepared nor aware that law is a subject area where simple regurgitation of facts is not sufficient. If you want to learn, Rebecca’s class is the place to do it.

Apart from teaching, she took on the law school re their 3 to 1 male/female prof ratio. This took guts & rocked the boat as law seems more about maintaining the status quo than making change. She's courageous, down to earth, approachable & smart. I'm proud to know her. Unlike most lawyers (& some profs) she makes me proud to be in this profession.

I was begging friends from Hester's class for their LLP notes, because I got very little sense of what was important from Rebecca. Apart from the need to apply Simpsons analogies as much as possible to a fact pattern.

Rebecca is intellent but overbearing and an "elitist" who likes to espouse the theoretical approach, thus the unfortunate result is that you may not get a good UVIC lawyer (likely) who can conduct your judicial review or interpret statute soundly!Nobody is learning in that environment please improve

rebecca is a hard marker and she covers material very quickly, but she knows what she's talking about and she challenges students to think (some students seem to resent her for this).

RUN.........do not take a class with this woman. She drinks wayy too much coffee, she is unfocused, and you WILL NOT learn legal skills or theory as it applies to the law you learn. class questions she gives ambigious answers-very unhelpful. RUN AWAY!

Really nice person & loves the law. Unfortunately, we spent more time in Crim in one semester talking about the Charter then we did all year in Constitutional. Ease up. Give us more good time & crime stuff!
