Very boring. I would not recommend him. He has a mid term and final where he makes you memorize Japanese words and if you dont include them in your essays youll lose points. You also have to read 3 books about Japanese culture and write reflections about them. Avoid him unless you want to struggle and stress about this class

Condescending and rude. He reads test essay answers out loud with the purpose of embarrassing students. Be prepared to memorize loads of useless information to regurgitate for tests, and still not have your answers be good enough for an A. Terrible professor. Avoid if possible.

He grades you on the max of 5 things, a midterm, final, and up to 3 book reports. He gave the class an average of a C- on our midterm, was going to call us the non-politically correct work for mental problems, but caught himself and said "Oh yeah, I cant say that." His exams are,but aren't hard. They aren't multiple choice, they're 2 pg essays.

The class itself was not hard, but the way Prof. Hesselink graded was harsh. For papers we wrote in the class and exams, he never provided feedback on how to improve or what we did wrong. Lectures are long and boring. He has a great sense of humor, though. Overall, I would probably recommend taking this class because it was super easy.

Tough class, but definitely doable for the humanities credit. Definitely need to go to class to get the notes. 2 exams, 3 personals relations to novels which are easy just read the book and provide your opinion for an A on those. Exams are somewhat difficult but its clear what to do to prepare. Lectures can get long and hard to pay attention to

This professor is horrible. No matter how hard you try you will get no higher than a B. Awful and boring lectures, and you must attend to pass. He grades however he likes and does not tell you why you received the grade you did. No room for improvement since there's no feedback.

He was overall a pretty decent lecturer. They are quite long and can be a bit overwhelming with the grand amount of information. Sometimes he is funny. He makes some off-color remarks. Like about sex, or the real reason for going to college (which he thinks is to get money). It was a tough class, but I remember quite a bit about Japan.

I really enjoyed professor Hesselink. If you pay attention in class and read the assigned material, you will pass with no problems. You don't need the textbook, but you need the other books. There are only 2 exams. If you do bad on the first exam, he will give you the grade that you get on the final and replace it with the first exam. Study hard.

Reinier gives great lectures. I really enjoy what he covers but the test feel impossible. Impossible to remember all the things covered on the study guide. You will need to pay attention in class and take detailed notes every class period. Miss a day and you miss a lot of information. Papers are extremely easy, probably wont save your grade though.

So boring! Only 2 tests, the mid term and the final, and three book reports. Luckily he gives you the study guide ahead of time. Long lectures, but he will answer your questions.

Professor Hesselink makes you work for your grade. Overall I really enjoyed the class and learned a lot about Japan. By taking good notes and writing out the essays before the test you will get a good grade.

Unless you are EXTREMELY good at note-taking, test-taking, and understanding incoherent, inconsistent, loosely-organized lecture, I would STRONGLY recommend taking another non-western culture class. Avoid this class if possible.

This class is really not as hard as people say. There are 3 papers on books but they are not hard because he just wants your personal opinion on something in the book. The midterm and final do require a good deal of studying but as long as you put the time in you'll be fine. Also he's funny and a nice person.

So I went to Japan in 2005, I speak fluent Japanese, and I am a self-proclaimed Japanophile. After taking this class I switched my interests. Renier is incredibly condescending, rude, and not helpful at all. And don't even think of going to anyone about him, I tried and was basically laughed at.

This class is a disaster. There is no coherent organization. The professor jumps around, only says things once and does not answer questions when asked. He also has a serious speech impediment that it makes it twice as difficult to understand him with his accent. The assigned reading is difficult even for upperclassmen.

This guy is a dreadful professor and a pathetic human being. His standards are arbitrary, and he loves condescending, snide remarks to students. He'll lecture you on work ethic then refuse to even properly explain grades or assignments. Avoid this guy AT ALL COSTS. Seriously.

Hesselink is tough and it is a struggle to pay attention to a full hour and a half of class. I used a voice recorder and that helped a lot for studying. If you go to every class he will bump up your grade. This class is a lot of work and you don't learn much about modern Japan.
