I took Dr. Berg's 1st year Religious Studies Class in 1993 where he taught the "eastern religions" portion of the course. I often think of him now that i'm an ordained Soto Zen Buddhist priest . He was knowledgeable, his lectures were interesting and well structured, he fostered questioning and conversation and intelligent discourse, GSOH too!

Repeat what he says without thinking about it, and try not to fall asleep at your desk. The smile was quite creepy.

Random essay and test marks; submit the same essay twice and you will likely receive a 60 and an 84. Only take his course if you enjoy randomness. This was my only course, I spent so much time studying and I have nothing to show for it. Nothing.

I never knew someone could repeat the same thing so many times but still say it like he's never said it to the class before. That about sums up Berg. Very, very dry class. Almost no opportunity for application to real life.

Very open minded during lectures, opinionated while marking. Attempts to get everyone involved in class discussions, and does not frown (that much) on abstract responses. Overall, if you learn his style he's an excellent prof.

Comment:
Very traditional - extremely knowledgeable - interesting lectures - difficult to get clear answers to questions sometimes (he answers like a politician). Very old school attitude, but that's okay, just do the work and you will get a good mark. Should it be any other way?

Dr. Berg has to be one of the clearest, most understandable teacher. There will never be a time when a student is confused as to what he expects from you, and he is always available to help if one has trouble understanding the concepts.

There is no reason for not geting an A in his class; his lecture notes are available online, exam questions are given ahead of time, and there are always opportunities for bonus marks. How anyone possibly dislike him and his amusing old-fogey antics is beyond me. Get to know him. You won't regret it

I can't believe the low marks Berg has gotten. His classes are always highly structured yet he still allows time for discussion. He doesn't just give out letter grades as I earned a 90. Don't let the other comments fool you, philosophy may be hard, Berg is a great teacher.

Take a tape recorder to class and record what he says. Then memorize it, and write it out on the tests and exams. Don't even bother trying to come to your own opinion since his is the only one that counts. Even if the text and everyone else on earth disagrees, he's still "right". Avoid his class!

This guy had no control over his class. Don't expect to get a great mark; he gives out only letter grades, and an A is an 80. On the brighter side, he does seem to have a broad range of knowledge, but this usually just leads to him getting off topic every 5 minutes.

So long as your opinion is exactly the same as his you will do wonderful in this class. However if you have your own thoughts on something youd better keep them to yourself or risk failing.
