teacher with a great sense of humor, a little odd but he cares about his students being in class very much. He will lecture you if you don't come to class. Class consists of a lot of reading, and you must be in class to do the assignments which are a big part of the grade. There are a few essays, It's hard to get an A on them unless you're flawless

The reviews below provide great insight about the teacher he is. He was terrible. No drafts, hard grader (claims he was easy), walking into class was a drag. His assignments are basically read, context, meaning. Everyday until the end of the quarter. When confused, I tried to clarify the assignment, he basically told me to just do it. DO NOT TAKE!

Going to this class was straight torture. He literally asks the same thing everyday. Read the essay. React. What's the context? What's your take on the essay? His only assignments are 4 essays and the final. He has a really boring and sleepy voice. And his "breaks" for class are to go out and have a cigarette. Easy B if you just turn in the essays.

I really enjoyed his class. It was challenging because he lets us think and form our own opinions and ideas about the essays we read in class. He'll make you work for that A. If you want an easy A, don't take his class.

Overall, he is not a bad teacher but I found that he was very vague with his assignment directions and when answering students' questions. He is not afraid to call students out if they are not doing well, late, or talking so beware. You have to do your essays and the daily assignment or you won't pass.

Don't pay attention to the previous bad reviews. He is a great professor who wants his students to improve their literacy. He makes you think about every aspect of a situation, which is important to elaborate on your thoughts whether if its a group discussion or on your essays. Show up to class, do the reading and you'll pass. Trust Me.

Really do not understand why their is so many bad reviews. He does make the class a little dull and he is sometimes mean, but overall Garvin is a nice guy and just wants to develop your writing skills. Easy grader, no tests but several papers. Attendance mandatory (2+ cuts dropped) You can easily show up, space out and pass the class.

The most boring & dull experience. It is always the same thing. You do your reading at home, then do a bunch of exercises and discussions in class. But essays count towards the grade so much and getting an A is very challenging. He is not very clear on what he is looking for, but he does that on purpose because he does not want us to be formulaic.

You do a daily exercise that he always gives you 5/5. SUPER hard to get an A, very unclear on what he wants on essays, mumbles, and overall very boring class. My class sort of bonded towards the end of the quarter over how much we hated him. Take him if you are fine with getting a B cause thats what he gives everyone

Vague and unclear about what he wants in essays. Difficult to get an A but not impossible if you try hard. Other assignments are easy and you get credit for at least trying. One of my easier classes, really not that bad.

I didn't really like him. Wasn't very helpful; easy to get B but hard to get an A. I was very frustrated with writing after taking his class. Don't do it.

Very difficult to get an A. The teacher is not helpful at all. I would spend so much time writing my essays the best I could. Really easy to get B+ but not an A. Good bye my 4.0. :( Seriously don't even bother taking him.

Easy teacher, but if you want to learn and be prepared for future english classes, i suggest choosing others. This class was more of a reading class than an english writing class.

Garvin is a difficult professor if you don't have a sense of personal accountability. He WILL hold you responsible for getting to class on time, doing your work, and participating in a meaningful way. Some people might not like that but he will help you grow as an adult and a writer. The textbooks are inexpensive and the essays are interesting.

Super easy class if you ever took AP English classes. Four take-home papers, one in-class, and in-class essay for the final. Class is long and boring with discussions practically all day for every class. Interesting texts but class is not very interesting at all. Exercises about the readings and that's about it. Easy grade if you give effort.

Easy class, 4 essays 100 Pts each, but VERY DO-ABLE. Class discussion are kinda annoying as he is unclear and repeats stuff obnoxiously. But honestly, just show up and you'll get a 5/5 for simply writing answers even if they are wrong. Boring class? KINDA, but hes not that bad... The reading is super short and to the point!
