He gives your work excellent critm, but provides 0 instruction. If you need practice and can already draw well, this can be a good class. If you need extra help and actual instrctn, you won't get it here. He has phys condtns that don't allow him to look at your work while you are doing it and give you help. My 1st class I got 2-1/2 min of his time

I had Prof. Washington for five semesters, and i am sad that i won't be able to take him again. he helped me grow as an artist more than any other prof. he challenges you to push your limits and really does make you improve. if you dont have a srong work ethic you wont do well. he doesnt sugarcoat anything, thick skin is a must.

DO THE RIGHT THING. BETTER EAT YOUR WHEETIES. Great teacher as he challenges you to think for yourself & gives honest feedback. Class focus is the nude (obviously) but great variety of body types and poses. Encourage to experiment with media and style. Avoid "cute" though.

My problem was he is unorganized and seemed to just make up the schedule on a day to day basis. I have no background in art and some of the techniques were introduced with no thorough explanation and then they would be followed up by assignments that I would have to go to the internet to find actual instruction on (mostly drawing).

I had Washington for two semesters. If you dont put in effort or do your homework most likely you will not like him, but who's fault is that? Hard work pays off in Life Drawing, for yourself and for your grade. Washington is a great prof.

accurate rating below. if you are not outgoing or female prepare to be shunned. lots of time is wasted between poses. just nudes over and over, if you need practice this class is for you. one of the only profs that will give you honest evaluation, sometimes unprofessional though, (will talk about students behind backs) is funny really though...

serious art students need not waste your time, if you are a drawing major you will waste four semesters doing the same nudes over and over again. he does favor the female and those who's noses land between his buttocks. you will produce no show worthy work in class (unless you love boring nude models) which i can draw quite well by the way.

Seems lot of these whiners expect to pay for a good grade and that's it. Guess what folks, college is supposed to be hard. Quit stating "I'm an A student" because if you were you wouldn't wine about his class so much, you would just do the work. EMU art is so full of spoiled little babies.Seriously, you people make me embarassed to be part of EMU.

I took a Class From Richard Washington in 1972. He was very Professional and did favor the females -But- was always fair. I am a public school teacher and recently retired in Nevada... But I always remember his dedication to his work and would help as needed... but again "art' is a tough profession to break into... I respected his conf & knowledge

Great energy. Highly motivational. Makes you reach down and clarify both your skills and your vision as an artist. One of EMU's greatest professors.

I took Prof. Washington for 7 semesters. He's a great teacher, but he can be very difficult. He pushes you so you will better yourself and explore your innerself. His classes are not for the faint at heart, cause he will criticize your work. A lot of people take offense cause they feel like they personally are being attacked, but that's not the case. It's about the work, not about you....some people seem to forget this. If you're serious about drawing and want to better yourself, than I highly recommend him

I had Richard for 4 semesters of Life Drawing and he was also on my M.F.A commitee. If you're not into exploring the depths of your work or really committing to art I'd say don't take his class. He's tough, but fair. I think saying he is biast against males is unfounded. I know several men in my classes that would vouch for that. His assignments are creative and his lecturing is very unique. I especially enjoy his philosphy on working with your peers in class!

most drawing classes i have taken the teachers praise my work and use it as an example. which helps me grow little to none. rw gave me a hard time and pushed and pushed me. he let me show my work w. the grad's for critique (was the only 1st yr to do so) so i knew he saw my skill but he told me "you may be good after another semester of my teaching" this teacher is very difficult but i am sooooooo happy that i was able to experience. fyi he doesn't like ugly drawings and will tell you if it is

Picks favorites, I was one of them but I still felt it was unfair. Bullies students and is unreasonable. If there were another option for a drawing professor at Eastern, I'd find a way to take him or her.
