Tough marker from what I have seen in the class. Also, admitted he does not know much about military history, yet marks pretty biased on military topics for Napoleonic Europe period... hmm.. Anyways, pretty dry. Can be funny at times, but good to take notes from his speaking, however his lecture slides are somewhat useless. Decent prof.

Great prof! Going to class is definitely a must, he doesn't post his notes anywhere. However, talks very slowly so it is very easy to take notes! Pretty funny also, and always asks any question he's asked in class. Obviously knows the subject material well, and is passionate about it.

Speaks slowly - great for note taking. Marks a little lower than others in the department. He wrote the text and it is somewhat... disjointed. If you are new to the subject area you will want another source for background information.

Great, great man- and better yet great professor. I found his marking to be quite generous- go to class and study and bit and you'll do fine. I did well on my paper too, which was a surprise. He will expect you to participate in seminars though, just a warning- no bail outs for the shy kids. Still, I would definitely take another class with him.

Dr.Alexander is a great professor, very clear and sets out good guidelines for his notes. He does not post his notes anywhere, you have to attend the class to get the notes for sure. Tests were reasonable but he is a hard marker - make sure to read the text as well as the notes taken in class!

I love this man. Coming to his class was always a treat. He has a very dry sense of humour. Didn't use slides which worked for me but take note if that's your learning style. He is an adorable prof and if I were even the least bit interested in French history (as he clearly is) I would take another class with him in a hearbeat.

Super clear lecturer, gives key terms at the start of each lecture which are useful for review. Final exam is straightforward- he gives you the general area for the essay topics and the short answer are taken from the lectures' key terms. Fair marker.

One of the best at UVic. He cares about the material and the student, and will go out of his way to ensure that the subject is understood. Has a lovely sense of (dry)humour. I have taken 4 courses with Dr Alexander and will take more if other ones are offered.

Friendly Professor who gave very engaging lectures. You can tell that he knows the historical material inside out. When it comes to marking, he is a tough but comprehensive marker who really takes time to read your work. One criticism is that it was difficult to pull out notes from his orator style, but otherwise there is little not to like.

Best history prof I've had at UVic, and I'm a history major... Loved that he actually gives a ton of comments on your essay. You can tell he really goes over them and doesn't let the TAs do all the work. Great class, I would recommend it to everyone. A ton of note taking though, but exams are clearly explained so studying isn't too bad. Great class

I honestly never intended to study French history when I went to UVic, but I really enjoyed Dr. Alexander's lectures. Lots of note-taking, but he's already organized the information for you really well and he's clear/upfront with what will be on the exam. A really nice guy with a great, dry wit.

I really enjoyed learning about the French Revolution with Dr. Alexander - he is a great lecturer with funny anecdotes every class. He also structured the class really well with seminars once a week. I would recommend him to anyone - he actually writes helpful comments on your papers and marks fairly.

Excellent lecturer who I've never seen fail to cleary satisfy someone asking a question. Those classes in which he has tutorials he splits it in 2 and gives half the class a day off. Has a good sense of humor and is very reasonable and approachable. Didn't like Fr History before, now I've taken 3 of his classes.

Clearly lays out what he is going to cover in each lecture and sticks to it. Picks out interesting themes, tells good stories (some definitely laugh-out-loud worthy), and is a clear, although occasionally monotone, speaker. In seminars, makes an effort to include everybody and have everyone feel at ease. A medium-tough, fair marker - good comments.
