Dr. Herzstein has a fabulous way of teaching history by following concepts (politics, religion, art, economics) and how they evolve over time. His approach provides a great connection and relevance to the history you learn in lieu of promoting rote memorization of dates and events. I took his honor's European history many years ago--it was great!

He is a cool professor. Only issues are that his notes don't always make sense and he flys through them. Also, he is a harsh grader, but after the first exam (if you survive it) you will be able to answer in ways that will get you your points since you know how he grades. Okay class overall.

Awesome professor. I never bought the book and made an A. He gives a packet of notes at the begining of the course with everything you could possibly need (and a little more) in it. It's military history, but you don't need to have any kind of military or history background to take it. Very interesting course and he's a great teacher. take him!

Professor Herzstein is a wonderful teacher. He loves what he teaches and it shows. This is not an easy class nor is it difficult. Be prepared to study and never miss a lecture, if for no other reason than to hear great lectures. You will learn a lot from the best historian at USC. He also has a wicked sense of humor if you listen carefully.

Terrific professor. Do yourself a favor and take anything this man teaches. He made me like going to class. Didn't use the book at all. Not hard at all, I'm a student with a 1.7 GPA and I made an A in this class! I converted to a History major after this class! I can't say enough good things about him. Trust me, take his class.

Awesome professor. If you get the chance to take a class with this professor, take it. He really knows his stuff but he's not one of those professors who think that you should come into the class knowing everything he does. Great guy and a true warrior. you'll get an A if you pay attention at all. I never cracked the book and made an A easily.

Dr. Herzstein is amazingly knowledgeable (specialty in Nazi Germany). His class isn't hard if you do the readings in the sourcebook and reference them on your exams. Makes all the difference! His lectures are a bit confusing, I would recommend printing his notes (on Blackboard) and adding to them on your own in class according to his lecture.

Herzstein is a good lecturer. Word on the street is he is also a very leinient grader. HOWEVER its luck of the draw on the TA's. I had the most inconsistent grader and pretentious TA of all time, Crosmun. So should be an easy class depending on who teaches your discussion.

He really is a good lecturer, you can tell that he really loves the subject. And he helps out by posting his notes on line, you just need to study them before the exams. Just be careful about the TAs, Crosmun is rough.

Seems like a really nice guy. The hardest part about his class are the lectures. He is hard to follow a lot of the time and my notes hardly ever flow together. He is passionate about history and knows his stuff. Go to class and read the material - otherwise it's hopeless.

Herzstien himself is a great teacher. He makes even 16th century Europe pretty interesting to a non-major. You've just got to watch out for certain TA's, namely Crosmun (a.k.a American History X). I've had many quizzes/exams get bombed by Crosmun, but Herzstien graded one and gave me an "A-," so its not ME. Overall, class is usually interesting

Let it be known that this is a Military History Course. Diplomatic and Social History majors beware. Also if you are a liberal just about everything that is said by Herzog will offend you. I am ofliberal mind and everytime he said something outlandish I always smiled, Don't argue with him. Pretty hard tests, but easy quizes.

Dr. Herzstein is hands down, the BEST History Professor at USC. I have taken several classes and have never learned as much as I have with him. Knows his content perfectly and is a great teacher. Take him even if you do not need a History class.

Very good professor who is one of the leading experts on Nazism. I don't have a problem with his emphasis on the involvement of ordinary Germans in enabling the Nazis to run Germany; if anything it shows that supposedly good and educated people can be seduced by reactionary politicians who give easy answers to difficult questions.
