Comment:
Dr. Newby was very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. The class was more discussion based which was based off documentaries watched in class and assigned readings. You will love this class if you are a proponent of Civil Rights, otherwise it will challenge you and you may become disenchanted with Newby's presentation of the material.

This is a man that is not afraid to speak the truth. He also very knowledgeable on the history of his topics. I pray that he stays safe, because usually when someone uncovers history that goes against racism that person will be attacked, and told why go back in the past and let's move forward. I hear you doctor, please keep speaking truths,

good information, but if he asks your opinion make sure it matches his or he will tell you are wrong and re-ask the question, regardless of if it is how you feel or not.

Absolutely refused, to teach anything. When confronted with an opposing view he simply ignored the position outright or made no attempt to 'educate' the students.

Dr. Newby is the most knowledgeable sociology professor at CMU. He possesses a wealth of knowledge that will benefit you if you let it. Anyone who was offended by information he presented in lecture should NOT be taking a sociology course in the first place! The hardest "A" I EVER earned, but well worth the tremendous amount of work required.

Newby asks for opinions but those opinions must match his own. He takes points off for dumb, nitpicky reasons, and if you try earn those points back, he ignores you. Do not take from Professor Newby!

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! Took this class simply to gain credits and regret it. He is so rude to his students and does not value anyone's opinion but his own. He teaches you to be opened minded in the discussion, yet shoots down any idea he does not agree with.

Robert Newby is the reason that I changed my major to Sociology. This man is the greatest guy that I have ever known. Hes more than willing to make you think outside of the box and make you question everything in todays world. I still talk to him after graduating and he has helped me further my education at Wayne State.

Yeah, he knows the material, but in no way will he be able to deliver it to you. Half of our exams wer a) not mentioned in class, b) not in the books and c) borderline impossible to even look up on the internet. Sometimes randomly puts obscure nobody lawyers on the exams. Keep your think pieces within one page, some people didn't ever get it.

This class is hard, but not because he 'pushes' his agenda. If you can't take your ideas being challenged college isn't the place for you. Newby wants you to think about your stance and be able to defend it. He is helpful and clear. His tests are extremely hard, but if you put forth effort you will earn the grade you deserve.

Dont take this guy unless you like being taught opinions rather than facts. This is not a college course. It is an agenda he pushes.

I really liked Newby. I thought he was the most influential teacher that I have ever had. He knows a lot about pretty much anything that you ask him, but dont challenge him before he hands out the tests. I think that this man is great.

If you value your sanity and your GPA, don't take a class from him. The ave. score of all of the students for the first exam was an "E" or 24 out of 50 & the 2nd exam was an "F" or 29 out of 50. He does grade on a curve, but the tests questions are truely unfair. He also requires readings and being familiar with them of 400+ pages for each exam

Mr. Newby is a very old man who lived through the civil rights era so he knows what he is talking about. He is a well educated man and it is impossible to change his views. He is a terrible teacher however, his lectures are just stories. Im not going to say he is a ****, but I cant really think of another word for it.
