Porter is a really great professor. His teaching style encourages students to talk to one another in order to come to conclusions on their own. He's very open minded and enjoys hearing everybody's opinion. There is a lot of reading and discussions in his Political Theory class, so be prepared. The midterm/final were take home exams/papers.

Prof. Porter provides a great, engaging class! Participation is important to succeed but if you don't want to talk, he doesn't force you. There's a lot of reading involved which is interesting if you're interested in learning about past philosophers and political thinkers, but boring if not.

Professor Porter is an amazing person and teacher. He understands that life happens sometimes and is willing to work with you if things come up. His lectures are amazing, mostly seminar circles, not just powerpoint and note taking. He is open to everyones opinion and likes a tough conversation.

Robert Porter is truly one of a kind! Professors like him are rare and hard to come across. He genuinely cares about his students and their feedback. He has a very clear schedule. He is good at making connections between the real world and the textbook. I highly recommend taking any of his political science courses!

Really does a great job leading a discussion-based class where the discussions really create an atmosphere of understanding for everyone, even when the material is very abstract. Not afraid to voice his opinions, but more than willing to hear ours too. Great guy, super relatable. Tests weren't terribly difficult, but were frequent.

All that Whitman was pointless torture. But I guess that's just a course issue? I corrected errors on the quizzes and he said he would make sure those questions weren't on the final. But one was. It wasn't even covered anywhere. Quiz answers might be wrong. He uses test banks. Debate it and he may throw it out for you. Nice guy, frustrating class.

Professor Porter is great at giving his lectures. There is some reading but the 2 books we read in class were very interesting. He does give extra credit opportunities which is great. There are a lot of in class conversations, but if you are really shy like me you will be fine because he doesn't make you talk if you don't want to.

Fantastic teacher, one of the best classes I've ever taken. His political science class is run in a highly participatory way, so if you're super shy this might not be the best fit (although participation is NEVER mandatory). Highly recommended.

I wouldn't classify this class as an American government class. Lectures are on Whitman and class discussions end up being a therapy session where we relate our personal lives to Whitman. Very little of the material we cover is about American government.

Really cool teacher. Best class I've taken at VC. There's quite a bit of work but we talked about really good and controversial topics.

I took POLS V03 online and it was alot of work, but in a good way. Before taking this class I had no idea what was going on in the political science world. Professor Porter made the class read alot of material, but it was interesting material. He didn't assign essays but there are discussion posts, quizzes. Midterm and Final questions from quizzes.

Professor Porter is one of the most caring professors at Ventura College. PolySci04 was enjoyable and his classroom environment gives students a chance to voice their often differing opinions in a safe academic setting. If you do the work, you'll get an C. If you participate... you'll get your money's worth from this class... and an A. It's fun too

Excellent class. I was nervous for taking American Government but within the first day I was already learning more than my 12 years of grade school. No awful political debates. To the point, respectful questions to make you think. Clear grading. Do all the work well and you will pass with flying colors. Lots of reading but as expected. :)

I took this class online and there's definitely a lot of reading ,responding to 2-3 weekly discussions/assignments (and replying to another students response) and a quiz each Sunday. It was a very interesting class, but the midterm and final was very hard!

If you take this in the summer session be prepared to read and write...a lot! Read the book as the quizzes are very hard and the midterm and final are even harder. The discussion was a waste of time lots of comparing life to Whitman, which after the first week got old and didn't add to learning the material. It felt like busy work.

Took this class online during summer and was dreading it!! I didn't want to get into debates with people over current events - this did not happen! As it was summer school we watched a lot of videos that were inspirational and enjoyable (even for someone not into politics). There was no right or wrong answer when it came to discussions.

If you are someone whose time matters don't take any class. I hardly learned anything! It was more like group therapy. We talked more about the students in the class then the actual topic! Like "Say nice things about one another" sounds nice but I'd rather learn & understand the the actual class I signed up for.

I like this professor his online class is my favorite out of the four I am taking! It's the easiest one I have that's why its my favorite! Test's are a little difficult but you get three tries so that's pretty awesome.
