Took this my Sr. year & by far the hardest/worst class I've had. He brags about how many ways you can fail his class. Grades unnecessarily harsh for a 200 level. Makes a point to publicly chastise those struggling in class, yet refuses to help; said my test grade must reflect my lack of effort in the class & wasn't his problem. DON'T TAKE WITH HIM

You must do every assignment although he doesn't grade every assignment. DO NOT SKIP CLASS you never know when he will choose to collect work. The exams and how they are graded are graded so roughly. My advice is see your TA before you turn in any exam to make sure you are on the right track. This was the most stressful class I have ever taken.

Comment:

One of the harder classes I have had, but one of the absolute best professors I have had as well! Rowland makes it clear what you need to do in order to succeed and is very passionate. Tests are long but they are take home and he gives you plenty of time. Just don't procrastinate. Attendance is a must, as he collects the outlines for points.

Hard professor for sure but overall a cool guy. A lot of people don't like his class because you actually have to put in some effort... Definitely a class at KU I learned something in and was proud of my high grade

I'm in Rowland's class now and it's awesome. I was nervous going into it because, like you, I read a ton of comments saying that he assigns a ton of homework and is a tough grader. But the class has been so worthwhile. He also stops students after class to tell them that he appreciated their participation during the lecture , who does that?!

Dr. Rowland is one of the best teachers I have ever had. This was easily the best class I have had in all of my schooling. I have learned so much in a semester, and he has made me work for it. I would have paid twice what I did to take his class! Rowland taught his last COMS 235 class in Fall2014. Chelsea Graham will be taking over Spring2015.

Dr Rowland is an amazing man, the things he has accomplished are amazing! He really cares about this class and he WILL help you if you come to office hours! He wants you to succeed and if you try, you will. The exam papers are long but if you pay attention its more time consuming than it is difficult. Take a class with him before leaving KU!!

Professor Rowland's class was an awakening for me. He makes you work for your grades. You do a lot of work that never even gets turned in but you don't know what he will take for a grade and what not. Overall, his class is a ton of work and isn't a class for anyone just hoping to fulfill a core credit without caring. You have to care or fail.

Dr. Rowland is probably one of the most well-liked and respected professors here. Rowland is incredibly intelligent and engaging. He's passionate about rhetoric and is definitely an expert. The class is not easy for a 200-level class. It's not difficult in subject matter, but it contains quite tedious work and there are very long take home exams.

Rowland is a professor who pushes you .This is the first class at KU that I have truly enjoyed. I won't lie the class work is difficult and tedious and the exams are pretty difficult. Rowland and his TA'S are so passionate about what they are teaching and you rarely see that in the professors at this school. TAKE THIS CLASS.

Such a wonderful teacher! He gives his students tons of opportunity to succeed and genuinely wants his students to learn. The class is a lot of work but it is very worth it. He is willing to see/help you with any assignment, all you have to do it ask. Do the homework and go to class and you will do fine!

This man's course saved my education. I was borderline dropping out of school because I was so bored and had no direction. COMS 235 fascinated me. Rowland is not for the lazy - but he was my favorite professor. I started getting A's and making the honor roll after this because it taught me that going to class and reading actually matter.

Rowland is a great teacher. He is an expert in his field and his expectations are very clear and straightforward. The TAs I had for this class are more helpful and knowledgable than most professors I've had at KU. He is always available to help. You must attend class and take notes for tests and papers, but they are straightforward. Overall good :)
