Dr. Shaffern is a great professor! His tests aren't too difficult as long as you read over your notes. His lectures are very interesting, and he always writes key words and terms on the board so you know what to study come exam time. Dr. Shaffern is super understanding as well making him very easy to work with. Definitely would take his class again

Best professor at the University of Scranton. Papers can be difficult, though. He's a tough man to please when it comes to papers, but on tests he is a fair grader.

He was a really good prof. He isn't that hard as long as you pay attention to the notes. The text book is really just supplemental. For the tests, read the notes, then look at the book. NB-don't waste your money buying the supplemental short books. Just look at them on the internet

great! one of the best professors i've had. excited about what he teaches, and easy to listen to him for an entire class. Had Byzantine History and wish I could take more of his classes. Need to study/read for tests, but he gives most of what you need to know in class lecture. i'm not a history major... but i thought he was a great professor!

If you want to learn anything in European History, take him. It is tough, since tests are all written and essay, but he is awesome, animated and knows everything about the subject. Not a boring moment in the whole class! 3 tests and a final. 4 small books to read for discussions. No papers!

Even though he is a nice guy, his grading on papers is ridiculous!! He asks for your ideas and when you don't give him the "right idea" he automatically marks it all wrong! His instructions were never clear and his required reading was beyond humanly possible! He tried having us read an over 700 page book in 1 week! I would avoid for Seminar!

One of the best at the UofS. Class lectures are very interesting and he is extremely knowledgeable. Talk to him outside of class to ensure a good class participation grade. Take him if you can. Not an easy A but worth it regardless.

Shaffern might possibly be losing it, but it just makes the classes more worthwhile to attend. Not afraid to give his real opinions or to fessing up to insecurities that none of us would ever mention. As long as you take notes and attempt to do readings a solid B can be obtained.

I love shaffern. His laugh is creepy, and he wants to kill terrorists "by the bushelfull." Should be a monk, or in the army. Still, a great teacher. ALL LECTURE, and his movies suck. Outside reading sucks, but you dont have to read. Follow notes, youll get a B.

Excellent professor, brilliant mind, analytical, funny, interesting lectures. Tough but fair grader on papers--know your notes and the tests are easy (but be able to talk about more than simple facts.) Highly recommended.
