Super funny, but his lectures went off topic a lot. Easy material and was very passionate about what he was talking about, which you could tell because he could go off talking about one thing for an hour. Super easy to get in contact with and is very understanding. Would definitely take again.

Unbelievably easy and unintentionally funny. Classes were not mandatory at all and I never picked up the textbook. Lots of essays but his grading was easy and his feedback was helpful. Definitely a favourite prof and I will be taking his other classes in the future. Highly recommend.

Personable professor who cares about his students. Essay based course but fair and marks reasonably, however time must be spent on his two major essays because he won't give good grades for just handing in a paper. His course is based on his textbook so lectures don't vary from the chapters too much. Old school in that he doesn't use CUlearn.

Great online class to take. Don't need to worry much about watching lectures to be honest. They are often informative and fun, though.

With little to no specification about what he actually wants from your writing, he makes it difficult to get a good grade. The midterm was so long that most students didn't even finish. Make sure to pick an interesting book for the term paper or you will get stuck reading someone's doctoral thesis

A great prof, he uses his own book that he wrote for the class but the book is really well written and I actually didn't want to put it down at times. Sometimes states facts that are irrelevant for example calorie intake during WWII, was irrelevant but I thought was interesting, overall a good prof.

Good prof, but a lot of emphasis on things that weren't interesting to me (demography, diet, etc) which made it tough sometimes. Really nice guy though.

He's a really great prof. He keeps the lectures interesting, even though he doesn't use visual aids. He relates back to or references the French Revolution, demography and families because that's his specialty, but he is very good at getting back on topic quickly and adding humour to his classes. He's very clear and a really great lecturer.

Really knowledgeable and funny. Tests were easy and straightforward. He's also approachable and helpful in person. Learned my name in a 200-person class and took an interest in all his students.

An excellent lecturer who obviously has extensive knowledge on European history. He may go into tangents but still keeps to the main subject and does not read from notes or use overhead slides. He prepared me well during my first year, although I cannot say the same for my TA, who was sub-par in every way (marking, corresponding through email, etc)

Clearly knows his stuff and yes, his lectures aren't organized (he just talks off the top of his head) but he made the content interesting. Midterm/exam was simple and predictable. Seems like he genuinely cares about his students

He seems extremely smart and funny. However, if you are into a more structured lecture, this may be a teacher you want to avoid. I found it hard to really be interested in what was going on in the class, and I normally love the subject matter. However, other people seemed to really enjoy it so it might just be a matter of taste.

This is my favourite class! Professor Phillips is an awesome teacher! He doesn't just read notes like my other professors. He walks around at the front of the class and talks and I never get bored. He treats us like people, too, not like my other profs. It's a big class but I don't feel lost in it. I'll definately take more classes with him.
