Roger is an excellent prof I've had him for two courses. He really enjoys speaking so be prepared to listen, not everyhting he says is relevant but he really loves what he teaches. Uses cheap course pack and his personal online website, both very helpful. Very nice guy, marks fairly easy, and is very approachable. Would reccomend.

I was apprehensive taking this course because of the reviews but I genuinely enjoyed his class. He made his lectures very engaging by including pop culture into modern day poetry and I thought that was very cool. The overall course was very interesting. The only problem is that he can be a picky marker but my writing improved by the end!

I had this teacher a couple semesters ago and am surprised by his low rating and negative comments. Roger has a PhD in English Lit - he's an academic guy and not everyone's cup of tea, but he obviously knows what he is talking about and how to teach. In all my years at DC he's not bad. Google rycspace to see his blog/course syllabus. Good luck!

Get ready to read a ton since Roger expects you to finish a novel in 2 weeks. All 3 of the 4 novels are sexually disturbing (odd theme all semester) and fairly long. However, Roger provides great feedback on essays and cares about his students. He is also a easy marker and his midterm & final are easy. Dont skip or the else you lose 5% each time.

There are only 3 writes the whole semester. He is a very tough grader and expects a lot from his students. You NEED to show up to class because attendance matters. I have left halfway through some of his classes and he marked me absent for the whole class and took away marks. I didn't learn anything and feel like my writing skills didn't improve.

Most horrible teacher, expects way too much from the students. I have known 5 students from the same class who had no idea of what he is teaching including myself. Course outline is confusing. I strongly recommend not to take classes with him especially if it is your first year in college. Don't don't don't take classes with him.

English is my second language, but I enjoyed participating in all his classes. He is very organize, understanding and knowledgeable. If he knows that you are really working hard and "Trying" he will actually help you to achieve a good grade. This class might seem boring, but it is Not! he collaborates all our writings into our generation.

I don't mind him at all. The people who rated poorly were probably made to take the course for a program they're in a have no real respect for the subject itself. He does go into MASSIVE tangents but for the most part they're funny (unless they're last minute!!). He's very respectful and if you email him with concerns he replies. But hard marker!

Fully recommend this class if you're into listening to irrelevant topics for 3 hours. He is nice as a person tho, favors students. We talked and took notes one day on the history and languages in India and he drew a crude map on the board and talked about where's he's traveled the entire class, a class about analysis.

I was excited about going back to a first year class, boy was I wrong. I felt like I learned more about how to search for YouTube videos than analysis at all. Curriculum was NEVER brought up in class, just long disorganised opinionated tangents. Not a single student read the required reading one week because we didn't even know and he ranted.

Poetry lectures are dynamic including videos, music, etc. Very up-to-date with today's culture, as he included Kanye West's Ultralight Beams into our course, coinciding with the concert tour. His course pack provides an abundance of resources and examples. You must build a strong argument and provide evidence for all poetry essays and group work.

Roger is a nice guy, very approachable and has a cute old man charm to him, but beware he goes off topic A LOT. He gives a lot of mini history lessons in his lectures. He also has a thing for poetry, so if you write poetically he will give you an A for sure. Reviews a lot in class and lectures can be boring but he gives ample breaks.

Horrible teacher ever. Does not teach you English, teaches you a type of English. Which is rhetorical essays aka useless. So do not take his class if you're a first year cause his class is a gong show. He goes off on tangents. He was rude and obnoxious. Oh yeah might I add his 104 page outline that he expects you to read multiple times. HORRIBLE!

It was really refreshing and inspiring to see a teacher so passionate and interested in what he was teaching. Roger marks tough but fair, and is very interested in helping you improve your analytical writing. Classes include lots discussion on readings, and developing theses and topic sentences. Would take a class of his again in a heartbeat.

Think twice taking his class. Partial to students who talk. Syllabus is not organized. Teaching style is confusing and disorganized. There might be a method to his disorganization but it's not to the student's advantage. Very obsessed with Cambodia. Class is more a history class than a university writing class. Again think twice before enrolling

Roger is a great professor, talks quite a lot, but is interesting and insightful. You definitely need to participate and do the expected reading. No spoon-feeding here. Class outlines and course files are very clear and helpful. He is very easy to get hold of, responds to emails right away, and is easy to talk to. Work hard & you'll do well!

Roger is very organized. He gives you VERY specific instructions and if you do everything he says... you will not only pass.. you will do very well. He is a hard marker but at least you know EXACTLY what you need to do to improve. He gives 10 marks that are straight up gimmes. I got C's in the first half of the class and A's in the second half
