Comment:
This class is extremely worthwhile. If you have an interest in history, it's illuminating to hear Prof. Lotchin talk. He is old, and sometimes loses track of what he's talking about, but for the most part he is quite sharp and knows what he is talking about. Great class, I recommend it highly to all history majors (and history majors at heart).

BORING! This is the first class I've ever had that compelled me to skip, I attended class once every 2 weeks, and still getting an A. Books are very interesting to read, and the main text is very well-written. All info for midterm and final can be found online. Recitation is very interesting, all the TA's in my class were very helpful and enjoyable.

He is by far one of the most boring profs I ever had. The class mostly owns up to the TAs because the lectures are boring and literally do not teach you anything. Shame though, bz history of the American West is a great subject

Was an extremely hard class but very worth it. He was very helpful during office hours and accomodating with research problems. A fair grader. Learned a lot.

Obviously interested in his subject matter, but can be intimidating in cross-examination. He is also somewhat conservative, which I found refreshing on the mostly liberal campus.

Nice man, but lectures and readings were BORING. I love history and found this class to be challenging...mostly to stay awake-not grade wise. I wouldn't take another class with him again. I like to be interested and engaged in my classes.

The reading is extensive and boring. He is a very nice man and knowledgeable, but I find the lectures to be hard to stay awake through. I would never take a class with him again. He assigns you recitations and doesn't like to use ereserve, making your life very difficult. He also plays favorites

Extremely knowledgeable, does not lecture well due to a lack of fresh analysis and synthesis of ideas, the large number of readings are fairly balanced, recitations are required and participation is graded (discussions are thus very artificial)
