Had him for SOC306 and 358. The comments below surely come from those bitter about scoring poorly on his multiple choice tests. Chooses great materials for readings. Absolutely hilarious lectures combined with highly unique opinions. His MC tests are only difficult if you take poor notes and/or don't do the readings. Tests are well-designed!

I agree with the previous posters. He can be a funny guy but his class is terrible. I wasted $800 on tuition + $100 on books for this stupid course. I learned absolutely nothing. MC tests are based on random facts that he mentions for all of two minutes during class. The only good thing he did was adjust our grades at the end of the course.

Agreed 100% with the person below. Multiple choice test questions focus on the most random and irrelevant details of his lectures and readings. Lectures are funny but that is about the only good thing I can say about this guy. I get the impression he really doesn't care at all about his students.

Prof Gillis is a TERRIBLE professor. He never discusses the readings in lecture, present completely irrelevant info than that mentioned and explored in the assigned readings (which he never tests you on) and spends way too much time trying to be humerous to cover up for the fact that he cannot teach a third yr class affectively. Total waste of time

1 of the best professors at UofT and definitely 1 of the best sociologists in Canada - I took 2 of his courses one of which was his Urbanization course -loved it. He is witty and kind of reminds me of Jack Nicholson -strange, I know. Education will not be the same when this man retires. Excellent!
