This is a lecture with optional discussions, but extra credit is given if you attend those workshop discussions. Definitely read because there's a quiz every lecture and tests are based mostly off lecture notes and some textbook reading. There are two tests, both not bad. Also 3-4 papers, which can be difficult based on who your TA is.

Prof. Phillips is awesome. She's really flexible with paper deadlines, so just talk to her if something comes up. She gives pop quizzes every class, but they're straight forward with 2 questions on reading and 2 on lecture. I didn't do all of the reading and still got 4/4 on all the quizzes. Her lectures are interesting and usually include visuals.

she is boring. she doesn't do good lectures. and if you dont come to lecture you won't do well. 60% of exams are from lecture and 40% from TEXBOOK READING. be prepared to read. A LOT. She just says chapters and not specific pages soAlso she gives surprise POP QUIZ!!!! FUN

Easily the best professor I've had at BU. The reading for the class were carefully chosen and were all interesting and relevant to the course. She is crystal clear in what she expects from students, and is more interested in you actually learning than on giving you a hard time studying. All that is necessary to do well in this class is to not skip.

Passionate about the topic, she keeps you pretty engaged for such a large lecture. Nice class because discussion is not mandatory. She isn't the most intelligent woman on the topic. My high school US History professor was worlds more knowledgable than Phillips. The only good read is the book for the final paper. Midterms are fairly easy.

I hate history, but Prof. Phillips' enthusiasm in her lectures made the class actually very interesting. She also used a lot of multimedia, which kept me awake (even though she always let us out 30 min early).

Her lectures are very interesting and helpful. She does not just repeat what is in the book but builds on it with different information. The essays are hard but the exams/quizzes are easy as long as you study. Go to class or you wont do well. This class was by favorite history class by far!

Professor Phillips really knows her stuff. Lectures were interesting but long, and if you zoned out for a few minutes it could be hard to get back on track with the lecture (on average I'd usually have 3-5 pages of notes per lecture). Midterm, final, and essays (although tedious) weren't too painful and didn't require a MASSIVE amount of studying

Interesting lectures. Midterm and final were both very fair. The 3 required papers were pretty terrible, but the easy exams mostly make up for it.

Professor Phillips is amazing! Her lectures were so interesting and engaging that even though attendance wasn't mandatory, I wanted to attend every lecture. There are many extra credit opportunities, the exams are easy and straightforward, and the writing/reading assignments (though lengthy) were really interesting. Wish I could retake this class!

I LOVED this class. Professor Phillips's lectures were interesting and engaging. She gives lots of extra credit and if you do the reading, and take good notes you'll be fine. There's a lot of reading but the texts and writing assignments were interesting and the exams were straight-forward. The TF, Ben, ran great discussions. 10/10 for this class!

I took her for US 1900-1945. She's very smart and fair. The lectures are boring but easy to takes notes on. There were 2 tests and 3 papers. All the work is straightforward if you look thru the readings as need be. You don't need to do ALL the readings. I'm a slacker and will prolly get a B+ but if you actually try, you can certainly get an A.

phillips is interesting, but does read straight from her notes. show up to every class because sometimes she gives a bonus question for her midterm and final that you'll only know if you go to class. she is a nice woman and the tfs are not that bad. some are pretty opinionated though

She was a really nice person, but she always, always seemed to read from her lecture notes! It made for some extremely boring lectures. She uses different types of media, but sometimes doesn't incorporate the sound clips/video clips very well.

Enjoyed lectures very much. TF's grade papers harshly but consistently. If you are willing to work you can ace the papers and mini tests were simple. Good class

really sweet lady. loved that if you went to class and discussion, you could do well on the mini tests. papers were pretty easy to write but graded pretty harshly by the tf's. no final though. all in all a great 100 level class.

An easier class...many grades (3 papers, 3 tests, discussion, no final!) Very clear about concepts, tests are easy, papers not too bad though a TF grades them so go to office hours before it's due! Phillips plays songs/movies in lecture which was cool

So liberal it can be annoying when you'd rather make up on your own mind. But the lectures are very good and very, very interesting. Unfortunately the grades are all papers, and the size of the class means that everyone gets Bs anyway.

She's an ok lecturer. The main thing is your TF: your TF grades your papers and determines your discussion grade. As long as you have a good TF, the class is fine. Easy tests, although the papers are set to graduate-level standards
